This album is absolutely outstanding. i think i definitely have to point out the smartly placed lyrics, making statements and metaphors of the state of the world, while mentioning denying trends and how people rely on trends for their identity. i love the aggression shown in this album, especially coming up in Suicide Note Pt.2, which perfectly displays the emotion of being too deep into addiction to recover, whilst Suicide Note. Pt1 shows a more sentimental side and vulnerable perspective. Overall, this album has extremely catchy riffs, great vocals, bass, and perfect drumming, they kind of all align with eachother in the right way, which makes the album difficult to ignore.

The Great Southern Trendkill. What the heck does that even mean? Pantera had a penchant for album names that almost made sense, and this was the wackiest. Similarly, the music within is some of their most extreme and eclectic. It’s got easily their heaviest song ever in Suicide Note Pt. 2, whereas Pt. 1 is a calm, slow rocker. Floods is one of their longest songs, almost Progressive in nature and containing one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. The album is surprisingly consistent given the varying styles present here.
That being said, there is still a fair amount of “generic 90’s Groove Metal” here that doesn’t really stand out. Not exactly filler, but songs we’ve all heard many times that don’t offer much to people who aren’t die hard Pantera or Groove Metal fans.
The album has a dark, manic quality to it that probably mirrors the alleged turmoil within the band member’s lives at the time. It sounds like a death throe, and nothing against the underrated Reinventing the Steel, but it would have been a perfect swansong to end their career.

개인별로 음악적 취향이라는것이 있고 그 성향이 변하기 때문에 어떤 시기에 어떤 장르를 듣는지는 정말 천차만별이다.
나 또한 파워메탈, 프로그래시브메탈로 시작을 하면서 판테라라는 그룹또한 이름은 많이 들어보았고 또 그래서 한두번 들어는 보았지만 메탈 입문시절에는 이런 빡센 음악이 왜이리 멀게만 느껴졌는지 의문이다.
솔직히 이제서야 판테라의 진가를 알았으니 과거 거부감들었던 생각을 하며 하는 말이지만 첫인상은 그저 지저분하고 시끄럽게만 느껴졌었다. 대체 이렇게 과격한 음악을 어찌 즐길수있는것인지... , 사실 과격한것은 사실이다. ..만..
그런데 메탈안에서도 이 음악 저 음악다 들어보다보니 멜데스도 듣게되고 이런 거치 음악들도 듣고보니 그냥 과격하고 무식하기만 한것은 아닌것 같다. 어차피 메탈이라는 장르라는것 자체가 흥분의 도가니를 연출 가능한것이 장점 아니겠는가? 그런고로 판테라라는 그룹은 미국 메탈계에서 대단한 그룹중의 하나라고 생각한다.
어쩌다보니 구매한 음반이 이 음반이라 사실 이들의 전성기를 알리는 네개의 앨범중 마지막 앨범을 듣게 되었는데 앨범 정보를 보니 필 안젤모와 밴드 멤버들과의 불화로 레코딩이 따로 실시되었다. 보컬따로 연주따로...

Cowboys From Hell로 판테라에 입문하여 이 앨범에서 비로소 '빠'가 되었습니다. 다임백 대럴은 인터뷰에서 "매 앨범마다 새로운 음악을 보여 줄 것"이라고 말하며, 판테라를 스래시/그루브만으로 규정하지 말아달라고 했죠. 이 앨범은 그런 그의 철학이 가장 잘 묻어난 '판테라 사운드'의 정수를 보여줍니다.
아마 대럴은 이 앨범이 이렇게까지 빡쎄게 연출되는 걸 원하진 않았을 거예요. 애벗 형제 vs. 필립 간 불화 한 스푼이 마치 미원처럼 작용한 게 아닐지. 정말 분노의 감칠맛이 폭발하는 명반입니다.

Honestly such a great album in my opinion, it has quite a few weaker tracks like Suicide note pt1, drag the waters and 10's but The Southern Trendkil, Living Through Me, and The Underground In Amercia are awesome tracks! Phils vocals are killer on this album and exactly what I would hope from a Groove Metal Album, the drumming and guitars are great too! 85/100

this album is definitely a bit all over the place, but that being said has some great songs. drag the water and floods are my favorite as seems to be the consensus, but suicide note pt 2 and living through me are not far behind

이 앨범은 산지 꽤 되었지만 사실 메이저 3집까지는 나름 많이 들었지만 감상 횟수가 그만큼은 되지 않는다. 들어보니 전작과도 또 다른 맛이 있다. 1,5,7 ,9 생각난다.

멤버들의 불화와 마약 문제 등으로 인한 분노를 음악으로 표출한 작품. 판테라 커리어뿐 아니라 앵간한 익스트림 밴드들을 묻어버리는 개빡센 쓰래시 앨범으로 6,7번으로 연계되는 자살공책 시리즈는 이 앨범의 컨셉을 좌뇌에 때려박는다.

빡세고 무겁기론 판테라 커리어상 최고인 이들의 8집. 1,9,11번 트랙은 좋지만 나머지는 하나도 귀에 들어오지 않는다. 3곡도 구성이 잘 짜여진 덕분에 거부감 없이 들을 수 있는 것. 전작과 비교한다면 전작에 손을 들어줄 것이다.

시종일관 맹공을 퍼붓는 앨범 suicide note1, 2 가 핵폭탄급이라면 floods 는 수소폭탄급이다 빡세고도 그루브감이 제대로 융합된 최상의 메탈 음반이다

역량의 정점을 보여주는 앨범이라고 생각합니다. 이 형님들 특징은 커버와 음악이 딱맞는다는것. 미국남부 건조한모래사막을 휘젓고다니는 방울뱀의 사나움. 분노폭발 사운드가 살벌하게 공격합니다. 9번에서는 음습하고 축축한 분위기에 압도당하고맙니다. 인트로의 기분나쁘게 젖은 리프부터 빗물이 흐르는듯한 톤의 아웃트로까지 홍수의 묘사가 완벽합니다.

개인적으로 판테라 최고라고 생각하는 앨범.진짜로 자신들의 모든 걸 이용해 싸그리 다 때려부술 듯 전진하...는 건 1,7,8,10,11 번 트랙이다.나머지는 그루브를 살린 곡들이다. 물론 완급조절은 잘 해놓았다고 생각하지만 말이다. 13 Steps To Nowhere는 개인적으로 드럼 인트로가 굉장히 마음에 들었다. 물론 이 앨범의 정점은 누구나 알듯이 Suicide Note Pt.1,2지만 말이다.

전작보다 훨씬 좋게 들었다.. 앨범표지와 같이 판테라의 앨범 중 가장 극악무도한 앨범. 너무나 공격적이라서 자주 생각나고 기억에 남는 수작이다. 백미는 다임백대럴의 기타리프와 필립안젤모의 스크리밍
