In an interview, Fenriz said that the album was somewhat "rushed", in order to comply to contract clauses with their record label, Peaceville. He also noted that many of the songs feature "death metal guitar riffs" simply played in a "black metal style".

Nocturno Cultio의 질퍽하고 두터운 vocal은 분명 Black Metal을 위해 태어난 것이다.
개취로 이전 앨범인 hunger 스타일의 Fast Black에 비장미와 멜로다기 가미한 음악을 선호한다.
이 앨범같은 경우 슬로우에서 점차 분위기를 고조시키는 것만은 분명하다.
기존의 사타니즘에 벗어나서 멜로디를 가미한 서정적인 서사를 그리고 있다.
이 후 밴드는 NIN과 같은 경우처럼 점차 얌전해지는 형태로 운영하고 있는데...
뭐랄까.. 이들의 행적이 결국 보여주는 것은. 음악은 그냥 음악일 뿐...
창조하고 표현해나가는 것에는 경계가 없음을 보여주는 듯하다.

Though a legendary album now, Darkthrone’s A Blaze in the Northern Sky would have been a total shock to anyone previously following the band. Their debut was straight Death Metal, and though it did have a focus on melodies and cold atmospheres, other than that it had very little in common with this creature. I can only guess they started listening to Bathory and decided to go that route, cause I hear Bathory influence all over this. The biggest difference is instead of epic Vikings, the theme is Pagan winters.

A Blaze in the Northern Sky is just 6 long tracks filled with very competent Black Metal, consistent in quality from start to finish, and without many surprises. This is probably considered a landmark release in 2nd wave Black Metal due to its melodic tendencies and lyrical themes that steer away from Satanism. Interestingly, the production sounds a bit worse than their first album, maybe done intentionally to capture that authentic Black Metal sound. My favorite aspect here is the drumming, which is incredibly varied and has much more precision than most Black Metal at the time. The drummer knows when to drop into Doom territory and when to go all out, and does it all very well.

For me, I’ll say that while it is a great album, it didn’t live up to its hype. There’s nothing incredibly unique about it, and to me it’s just a Black Metal version of their debut – strong and competently played, but ultimately unmemorable. Definitely a great listen for that ... See More

최근에 블랙 메탈이 너무나도 좋아져서 베히모스, 크래들 오브 필쓰, 딤무 보거 외의 밴드들을 물색하던 중 블랙 메탈계에는 절대적인 입지를 지닌 필청 밴드들이 몇 있다는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 여러분들도 대충은 알고 계시겠지만 메탈 선진국 노르웨이의 레전드 오브 레전드급 밴드들인 Meyhem과 Burzum, Emperor 그리고 제가 리뷰를 작성하는 Darkthrone이지요. 처음에 본작의 몇 트랙을 듣고서는 이 앨범의 찬사가 과하다고 생각되었습니다. 비록 좋지 않은 음질 때문에 어떤 음악인지도 잘 모르고 감상했으니 말이지요.

하지만 마음을 추스르고 재청에 도전하니 비로소 blaze in the nothern sky만의 매력을 느낄 수가 있었습니다. 저를 블랙에 입문시켰던 밴드들보다는 다소 템포가 느리긴 하나 사악한 리프들의 정갈하지만 기분나쁜 반복, 사악한 보컬, 노이즈가 다소 섞여 있으나 위압감을 주는 드러밍이 한 데 모여 형언할 수 없는 박력을 선사해 준 것입니다.

다른 분들이 작성하신 리뷰들은 저보다 훨씬 전문적일 것이며 메탈 경력이 얼마 되지도 않는 제가 얕은 전문용어와 지식으로 이 앨범에 대해 나름대로의 분석을 끄적여 놓으면 아마 실례가 될 것 같습니다. 이 앨범의 깊이는 그 정도나 됩니다.

아무리 들어도 이건 백점짜리 앨범인듯 하다
1집에서 지향하던 그런음악이 전혀아니다. 이들이 이런 앨범을 낼지 누가 예상이나 했을까? 이건 진짜 블랙바이블이다.
이들이 이 앨범을 낸것이 우연이었을까? 우연이라고 하기엔 너무 질서정연하고 완벽하다. 우연이아닌 이들의 재능이란것은 Panzerfaust까지 증명이라도 하듯이 줄줄이 이어진다.
초창기 메이헴 버줌과 교제를 나눠서그런가 알순 없지만 이들의 장르변화는 블랙역사에서 없어서는 안될 사건이다.
트랙은 1부터 끝까지 다 들어야한다 자체가 모두 킬링이다,다 안들으려해도 저절로 이어폰이 빠지지 않을것임을 장담한다.

Beginning of Raw Black, Unholy Black!
Darkthrone 의 본 작은 Raw Black 이 지녀야 할 모든 것을 담고 있다. 모든 Raw Black 은 "A Blaze In The Northern Sky" 로 귀결된다. 글쎄 명반의 트리오라 불리는 후작과 후후작은 본작에 비해 아주 부족한 느낌을 받는다. 본 작의 큰 장점은 Metal 이 지녀야 할 Middle Tempo에서 오는 "Groove" 가 아닐까 싶다. Black Metal 도 "Metal" 이란 범주 안에 있기에 진행되는 리프 속에서도 선율을 지니고 가야한다. 그런 점에서 본작은 다분히 Metal 이라 하겠다.
이 음반을 듣는 42분 05초는 결코 헛된 시간이 되지 않을 것이다. 불경한 음악 속에 몸을 맏기면 그만이다.

다크스론 앨범들 중 주술적인 분위기에 황폐한 어둠의 분위기가 느껴지면서 질퍽하고 두터운 사악한 보컬이 잘 어우러진거 같습니다, 근데 잘때 들으면서 자니까 새벽에 황무지에 혼자 버려진듯한 느낌이 드네요 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

블랙메탈이라기보다는 크러스트 펑크 앨범에 가깝다. 블랙메탈 앨범이라고 평가한다면 80점을 주고 싶고, 크러스트 펑크 앨범이라고 평가한다면 95점 이상 주고 싶다. 따라서 90점을 준다.

메탈에는 통칭 "바이블"이라 불리는 해당 장르를 대표하는 음반이 존재한다. Master of Puppet, Blizzard of Ozz 등등... 블랙 메탈의 바이블이란 무엇인가? 의 나의 답변은 단연코 이 앨범이다. 블랙 메탈 특유의 로파이한 레코딩, 반기독교적 주제 등등... 허나 그 무엇보다 이 앨범을 최고로 돋보이게 하는 요소는 압도적인 1번 트랙의 인트로라 생각한다. 말 그대로 사탄경.

블랙메탈이 자리잡기 전 92년에 등장해서 모든 블랙밴드들에게 영향을 준 명반. 인트로부터 진짜 블랙메탈이 가져야할 '멋'이라는 걸 정립 시키지 않았을까? 모든 악기가 사악하고 불경하며 Nocturno Culto의 보컬은 수준이 너무 높다. 1집과 2집이 같은 방향성이 아니고는 이렇게 수준이 달라지기 힘든데 데스메탈의 쾌감이 블랙메탈에 성공적으로 안착했다.

블랙메탈이란 무엇인가요? 바로 이거에요. 음질이 조악해서 너무 좋은 앨범. 그러면서도 매우 멜로딕한 앨범.블랙메탈을 정의한다면 이게 블랙메탈 자체라고 이야기 하고 싶다. 다른 밴드 다른 앨범들은 여기의 파생형 아닐까? 하는 생각이 들정도.

유로니무스의 진로 컨설팅을 통해, 되도않던 데뷔작의 데스메탈 때려치고 2집부터 블랙메탈을 시작했는데 역사에 남을 수작이 바로 나와버렸습니다. 음산한 주술로 막을 여는것 부터 불경스럽기 짝이없으며, 뇌를 파고드는 악마적 트레몰로는 한겨울 노르웨이 숲 속의 공포로 청자를 쳐박아버립니다. 지금처럼 추운 계절 어두운 시간, 커버보며 듣기 제격입니다.

로우 자체를 이 밴드의 이 앨범으로 시작 했었는 지는 몰라도 이것 한가지만 알수 있다 로우 자체의 진면목을 오지게 잘 표현 하면서도 철두철미로서 학실히 완성 시켰다는 정의를 뼈져리게 내리고 있는 까만 금속의 명반 ㅋㅋ
