Sometimes you just burn out on material and we have toured Focus quite a bit. It does have a history and it obviously had an impact as an album, but at some point you do have to move on. With another album under our belts we’ll have enough material to really give people a whole body of new material to focus on instead of the past. But I enjoy Focus and to me it does seem like a record that represented something for us that was really honest. And I think it was a solid album, so it’s cool that it got some recognition.

Paul Masvidal이 이 앨범에 대해 인터뷰 를 했을 때 한 말이다. 이들에게도 엄청 실험적인 앨범이었다는 것을 알 수 있다. Cynic의 데뷔 앨범은 정말 많은 고초를 겪고 탄생한 대작이다. Cynic이 로드러너와 계약한 직후에 바로 탄생한 것이 아니라, 처음엔 밴드의 프론트맨인 Paul Masvidal과 드러머 Sean Reinert는 Death의 유럽투어에 함께 해야했으며, 두번째론 플로리다에 태풍이 불어서 기타리스트 Gobel의 집과 밴드의 연습실을 통째로 날려버렸다! Cynic은 이후 사실 이 break 사이에 Focus 앨범의 collaborated style 이 많이 발전되었다고 한 적 있다. Focus는 몇 달의 강제휴식을 거친 후 1993년에 발매되었다.
우리 이 앨범 낼라고 이 만큼 고생했어요! 라고 말하듯이, Focus의 내용물은 심상치가 않다. 이 계열에서 거의 최초? 라고 생각되는 Jazz+Death Metal의 Collaboration을 성공적으로 이뤄낸 모습을 전반적으로 볼 수 있다. 사실, 이들의 데뷔 초기, 즉 데모 시절에는 이들의 음악 스타일은 분명 thrash가 가미된 Death Metal 그 자체의 모습임을 알 수 있는데, 이 앨범이 Progressive Death Metal이라는 장르를 표명하곤 있지만, 사실은 Death Metal보다는 그냥 Cynic's Focus 라고 칭하고 싶다. 이런 익스트림한 프로그레시브함을 표방한 퓨전메탈을 하는 밴드들이 겪는 가장 자주 느껴지는 그리고 큰 문제는 두 장르의 조화를 이루려고 하다가 너무 멀리 나간다거나, 너무 조금 나가버려서 아니 이게 뭐여? 소리를 듣기 십상이라는 점인데, Focus 앨범은 그냥 Jazz적인 사운드와 Metallic한 사운드가 복잡하면서도 깔끔하게 조합됬다는 점에서 높은 점수를 주고싶다.
