인내심을 가지고 열번을 들었지만.. 도저히 좋은 것을 느낄 수 없었다.
독일의 스래쉬메탈 밴드 Deathrow 를 듣는 것같은 천편일률적인 드라이빙을 볼 수있는데..
모든 것은. 꼭.. 한 곡 같다. 똑같은 노래를 줄창 계속 듣는 느낌.
이 것은 각 곡들이 유기적으로 이어지면서 유니크하고 흡입력있는 사운드를 뽑아내는 것과는 분명한 차이가 있는 것이다.
무엇보다 vocal 한지 퀴리시는 스팩 상 헤비함을 대두꺼운 목소리 외 음역이 다이나믹하지 못한데.. (하이음역이 애매모호하다..)
이런 핸디캡을 극복하고 중세시대의 분위기를 내는 아이덴티티를 구축한 노력에 경이를 표한다.
1집은 이들의 드라이빙감을 즐기는 그 이상을 기대할 수 없다.
다만 각기 좋은 것들을 차용하여 본인들의 음악으로 승화 시키는 노력은 많은 결실을 이루게 하였다.
3집,4집 부터 곡의 완전무결함과 멜로디, 무미건조한 vocal에 레이어를 입혀 다채로움을 향상시켰다.(*1)
7집에서는 오케스트라를 가용함에 이른다.
*1 실제로 '한지 퀴리시'는 '퀸'의'프레디머큐리'의 빠라고 한다.

A great start for Blind Guardian in their metal journey. Well, this album is quite different from their later albums, where they went more in the European power metal direction. The album starts with the fan favorite track, "Majesty", which has a very interesting intro that you wouldn't guess the song will speed up later. The intro suddenly ends with a thunder sound effect, then the song starts along with Hansi's energetic scream. The whole album carries the same chaotic energy which I love so much. Just like every Blind Guardian album, this album also has insanely catchy choruses. To be honest, the tracks in the album sound very similar to each other, but who cares that if every track sounds good. Overall, this album is a speed metal masterpiece.

독일 유러피언 파워 메탈 신의 3대 강자라고 꼽을 수 있을 Blind guardian의 데뷔 앨범이다. 나머지 둘은? 역시 Helloween과 Gamma ray를 염두에 둔 표현이었다. 물론 독일에 유러피언 파워 메탈이라는 이름으로 포장될 수 있는 밴드가 어디 저 셋 뿐이겠냐만은-당장 떠오르는 것만도 Edguy와 Freedom call도 있고 말이다-, 이 셋은 아무래도 특별하다고밖엔 말할 수 없지 않을까. 최소한, Helloween이 열어 젖힌 유러피언 파워 메탈의 시대에 가장 먼저 Helloween이 탄 열차에 편승한 존재라고 할 수 있을 밴드들이 Gamma ray와 Blind guardian이니까. 물론 Gamma ray야 일전의 리뷰에서도 언급했듯이 본가 사장이 본가를 떠나 새로운 가게를 연 느낌이지만, Blind guardian은 역시 직접적인 관계는 없으니까.
하여간 앨범의 사운드 자체는 전반적으로 Helloween의 데뷔 앨범 [Walls of Jericho] 를 떠올리게 하는 면이 있다. [Walls of Jericho] 에 맨 처음으로 코멘트를 달 때 이런 뉘앙스의 코멘트를 달았던 걸로 기억한다-사실 정확히 말하면, 코멘트를 달았던 건지, 아니면 아예 평가를 하지 않았는지 잘 기억이 나질 않는데 (...) 그냥 그렇다고 넘어가자-. 아직은 설익은, 쓰래시의 느낌이 물씬 묻어나는 음악을 하고 있다고 말이다. 75-80. 스래쉬 향기가 많이 나는 시기였다. 마치 카이한센의 보컬하던 헬로윈 같은 면도 있다. 이 시기 스피드 메탈이라는 장르로 소개하기도 했느데 그 시절의 살짝 탈바꿈하는 그런 음반이다. 초 명곡의 느낌은 없으나 그래도 1집으로써 이 정도면 잘 만든 것 아닌가 싶다. 추가)리마스터 음질은 괜찮다

Nice starting album from one of my favourite metal bands of all time. Still, it's not the sound that later would name them as on of the greatest metal bands.

Underrated debut from Power Metal legends Blind Guardian is primarily Speed Metal with a healthy dose of Thrash riffs here and there. Great stuff, nice and aggressive but very melodic.

유럽 파워메탈의 한축을 담당한 블라인드가디언의 시작을 알리는 혈기왕성한 질주. 한지 퀴르시의 젊음의 생기 넘치는 보이스가 매력적입니다. 대체로 평범하고 무난하나, 두번째트랙 verse 에서의 멜로디감각과, 9번트랙에서의 드보르작 신세계교향곡 어프로치는 압권입니다. 헬로윈과 종종 비교되곤하는데 본작은 멜로디 보다는 힘과 에너지로 승부하려합니다.

헬로윈 초창기 달리는 스피드메탈 형식에 이들 특유의 중세 냄새가 앨범을 도배한다. 연주들도 힘있고 패기있는 작곡들이다. majesty, run for the night, the martyr가 주목할만하다.

거칠게 질주하는 가운데 유려한 멜로디도 갖추고 있는 명작.
훗날 정립되는 블라인드 가디언의 사운드와는 또 다른 매력으로 가득하다. Majesty, wizard’s Crown, Run for the Night, Battalions of Fear, Gandalf’s Rebirth 추천한다.

헬로윈의 walls of jericho 같은 앨범을 하나 뽑으라면 당당히 이 앨범을 뽑을 것이다. 실제로도 헬로윈의 영향을 많이 받았다는데... 문제는 이거 외에는 아직까지 walls of jericho 느낌나는 앨범을 못 들어봤다.

kvalitný debut, pre ocenenie kvality, je dobré si ho napočúvať viac krát (okrem originálnej odporúčam aj remasterovanú verziu). Kvalitné nápady striedajúce rýchlosť, melódie a tvrdosť. Spev Hansi-ho je melodický, ale oproti neskorším albumom drsnejší a priamočiarejší. Štýl: európsky Speed/Power Metal
