Helstar를 USPM의 전설로 만들어준 작품. 후속작 Nosferatu가 좀더 높은 평가를 받고는 있지만, A Distant Thunder는 밴드의 네 번째 앨범에 뒤지지 않는 걸작이다. 파워 메탈 팬들에게서 Nosferatu와 본작은 Helstar가 만든 마스터피스로 여겨질 만큼 수준높은 작품이다. 앨범에 수록된 곡들은 80년대 아메리칸 파워 메탈 특유의 투박한 에너지와 타이트한 긴장감에, Progressive Rock이라는 양념이 적절히 배어있다. A Distant Thunder는 European Power Metal과는 궤를 달리해서 한번 들을 때 머리에 쏙쏙 들어오는 내용물을 담고있는 것은 아니지만, 들으면 들을수록 청자를 빨아들이는 마약 같은 성분이 내포되어 있는 듯하다. The King is Dead나 Abandon Ship, Winds of War는 앨범의 매력을 제대로 웅변해주는 명트랙이라고 할 만하다. 담백한 전개와 파워풀한 연주와 호방한 James Rivera의 보컬링은 미국 파워 메탈의 진수를 보여주고 있다고 해도 과언이 아닐 것이다. 전작인 Remnants of War를 들었을 때도 Helstar의 역량에 놀라움을 금치 못했지만, A Distant Thunder는 그 이상을 보여주고 있다. Nosferatu에 비한다면 약간 부족해 보이지만, 역시 이 앨범 또한 80년대 파워 메탈을 상징하는 금자탑에 해당되는 작품이라 할 만할 것이다. 전작 Remnants of War에 이어 A Distant Thunder는 왜 이들이 해외 메탈 팬들로부터 시대를 초월하여 꾸준한 사랑을 받는지에 대해 적절한 답변을 해주고 있다.
