Ozzy Osbourne과의 불화로 Jake E. Lee는 밴드에서 해고당했다. Ozzy Osbourne과 결별한 후 Jake E. Lee는 자신과 비슷한 신세였던 보컬리스트 Ray Gillen을 만났다. 이 듀오는 Kiss와 Black Sabbath에서 드럼을 맡았던 Eric Singer와 베이시스트 Greg Chaisson을 맞이하여 Badlands를 발족시켰다. 이들의 스타일은 철저하게 정통 헤비 메탈에 근거를 두고 있다. 고음의 보컬에 화려한 연주의 솔로와 멜로디는 헤비 메탈의 전형적인 공식인데, Badlands는 이를 철저히 답습했다. 명성이 자자한 실력자들이 모였으니 형편없는 작품이 나올리 없었다. Badlands는 Impellitteri나 Scorpions 못지 않은 우수한 작품을 만들어냈다. 그런데 이 밴드에 대해서 의아한 점이 있는데, 분명 슈퍼 밴드의 모양새를 띠고 있는 밴드인데 어째서 이들은 큰 주목을 받지 못했는가이다. 80년대 말은 정통 헤비 메탈이 조금씩 퇴조하던 시기이긴 했지만, Badlands와 엇비슷한 실력자들로 채워진 Blue Murder는 기대 이상의 성공을 거두었다. 세일즈 면에서 Badlands의 셀프 타이틀 앨범은 40만 장이나 팔리기는 했다. 그러나 이정도 수치는 전 Ozzy Osbourne 출신의 기타리스트와 Kiss 출신의 멤버가 있는 밴드에게는 다소 모자라 보인다. 그러나 상업적인 성공여부와는 별개로 이 작품은 헤비 메탈의 고전이라 할 만한 가치가 있다.
