Tool is a band I’m not particularly fond of. There is the fact that everyone seems to love them – including non-Metalheads and people not normally interested in progressive brain music or however you want to say. It’s odd to me, how many times I’ve met someone who doesn’t like heavier music, “but I like Tool.” Especially considering they aren’t exactly… accessible. They top charts across multiple websites, Metal-centric and not. They get radio play, yet at the same time have a fanbase of some of the most esoteric music aficionados on the planet. They are a weird enigma, and I suppose that suits them…
My gripes with their status aside, none of that affects my own personal thoughts on the music. And for this album, Lateralus, the music is… Good. It’s quite good. Many of the tracks are actually really great. “Schism” is the hit, and for good reason; it combines every strength the band has into one elaborate track. Quiter, contemplative sections lead by odd-time rhythms explode into heavier crescendos; passionate, allegorical lyricism delivered in a fit of desperation sets a scene and mood that strikes to close to reality; and it’s all tied together by one of the most iconic music videos of all time (which normally don’t interest me, but this one… is an exception). “Ticks and Leeches is a personal favorite of mine, showcasing the band’s more aggressive and angry side, and having some of their best riffs (Tool isn’t really a riff-oriented ... 정의할 수 없는 밴드 Tool의 3집. 이들 커리어의 완성작이라고 할 수 있으며 대중에게 이름을 많이 알리게 된 앨범이다. 기승전결이 눈에 띄는 Danny의 드러밍, 심플하지만 귀에 꽂히는 Adam의 리프, 두둠한 픽업과 빵빵한 이펙터 사운드로 중무장한 Justin의 베이스, 그리고 Maynard의 평범한 듯 흡입력 있는 보컬이 가장 잘 어울리는 최고의 앨범이라 쉽게 말할 수 있다.
The Grudge, Schism은 악기를 다루는 사람이라면 Tool을 논할 때 반드시 포함되는 곡이며 개인적으로 가장 추천하는 곡(들)은 Parabol-Parabola이다. 이 곡들의 전개방식 과 사운드가 매우 인상깊고 흥미롭기 때문에(베이스 기준 Low to High tuning: B-E-D-G) 기타나 베이스를 치시는 분들 중 Tool에 관심이 없는 분들이라도 청취를 강력히 권장하는 바다

사람이 하던 습성이나 편견이 있으면 그걸 쉽사리 떨쳐버리기 어려운 경우가 많습니다. 60년대 후반에서 70년대 초중반까지 나왔던 소위 프로그레시브락 전성기 시절의 음악들을 진정한 프로그락으로 여겼던 적이 있었지요. 하지만 Porcupine tree와 Steven wilson, 포스트락의 Godspeed you black emperor를 비롯 Magyar posse, Sigur ros, 그리고 지금 리뷰를 작성하는 Tool 등등.. 비교적 상대적으로 현재와 근접해 나온 많은 음악들을 접하면서 그러한 편견은 많이 사라졌습니다. 오히려 언제부터인가 메탈과 더불어 이런 근작 프로그락들을 더 많이 듣고 있죠. 서두가 길었던 이유는 그만큼 들을만한 근작 프로그레시브라는 점을 주지시키기 위해서 입니다.
제 경우 오랜시간 들어왔던 음악 장르의 향기가 어느정도 베어있는 메탈 또는 락을 우연히 만나면 더 반가운 경우가 있는데 tool 의 앨범에서 그러한 점을 느낍니다. 긴장의 강약을 조절하는 듯한 부분은 흔히 다수 프로그락에서 볼수 있는 변화들이고 그 점이 프로그락 팬들에게 좋은 평가로 남지 않을까 싶습니다. 자켓에서 풍기는 어두움과 음악에서 느껴지는 심미적인 부분은 청자로 하여금 눈을 감은 상태로 음악의 감흥을 받으라고 하는듯해서 중간중간 눈을 감고 명상이나 한번 해볼까 싶다가 ... See More

말이 필요없는 청각 예술. 하지만 10,000 Days와 Fear Inoculum를 듣고 온 지금 100점을 주기는 쉽지 않다. 대니의 드러밍과 베이스라인, 호소력 짙은 보컬 모두 하고자 하는 말이 아주 많은 것처럼 들린다. 들을 때마다 한껏 고양되는 앨범.

I don´t belong to the absolute fanatics of this album. Some amazin track like Schism and The Grudge but too many fillers and overhyped tracks.

툴 스타일의 진지한 음악적 접근이 균형감있게 완성된 작품이다. 특유의 베이스라인이 찌개의 조미료처럼 감칠맛과 듣는 재미를 더해준다. 쉽게 귀에 들어오는 대중적인 스타일은 아니지만 반복해서 들으면서 숨은 재미를 찾는 취향의 애호가들에게 어울린다. 이들의 음악은 역시 은밀하면서 강력하다. 이런 수준의 앨범은 LP나 CD로 소장할 가치가 있다.

Already one of my favorite bands, these guys surprised me by finding new stylistic ground on this album. Like with Ænima, it took me a while to figure out how to feel what's happening in these songs, but when I got used to them I just started loving them more and more, taking 4 years to reach the top.

“난 지금 미쳐가고 있다. 이 해드폰에 내 모든 몸과 영혼을 맡겼다. 음악만이 나라에서 허락하는 유일한 마약이니깐” 이라는 멋진 어록을 남긴 그 친구는 아마 이 앨범을 듣고 있지 않았을까? 음악으로 환각여행을 간접체험하는 기분. 무섭지만 흥미로운 원초적 우주의 거친 에너지를 소리에 담아낸듯. 어렵지만 끌린다.

심오한 영역에 단지 집중하는 것 만으로 빠져들게 하는 마성의 매력. 나름 들어왔던 음악들과 또 차별화 되는 개성의 독보성.

Tool식 메탈의 정점이다. 아방가르드, 프로그레시브, 얼터너티브가 절묘하게 조화된 희대의 역작. Tool의 명성에 이끌린 리스너라면 첫 트랙만 들어봐도 좋으나 프록 메탈 매니아라면 반드시 마지막 트랙까지 완청할 것!

그때나 지금이나 프로그레시브 한다는 양반들은 넘치기 마련이었지만 툴은 그 중에서도 압도적이라고 할 수밖에... 범인들은 죽었다가 깨어나도 다다를 수 없는 경지에서 칼춤 제대로 벌여준다.
