스래시적 리프를 기반으로 빠르게 달리면서 나아가 서사성을 부여하고 더 폭넓은 사운드를 들려주는 멜로딕 스피드 메탈(유로피안 파워메탈). 유러피안 파워메탈은 스래시메탈로부터의 빠른 속도를 유지하고 공격성을 가사에 일정부분 남겨놓았지만 이러한 면모를 부각하기보다는 새로운 주제들을 들고 와 그들만의 색채를 만들어 냈고 결국 메탈의 한 축을 담당하는 장르로써 자리매김하게 되었다. 이러한 흐름의 거두 중 하나인 Iced Earth의 두번째 정규인 이 앨범에서도 스래시/스피드 메탈의 향기를 느낄 수 있다. 하지만 분명한 차이점도 있는데, 곡의 멜로딕함과 가사를 씹어뱉지 않고 노래를 하는 보컬, 그리고 너무 공격적에 치중한 한 가사로부터의 탈피가 그것이다. 빠른 리프의 전개에서는 긴박감이, 보컬에서는 힘찬 에너지를 느낄 수 있다. 깔끔한 멜로디의 전개도 훌륭하다. 가사적으로는 고전 헤비메탈에 가까운 약간은 판타지적인 내용 을 담았고 어쿠스틱으로 서정성을 더해주었다. 초기 파워메탈의 매력이 잘 드러나는 수작 앨범. 90점.

Iced Earth’s sophomore album is where they aced their style of epic, thrashy Power Metal. The album is a concept about a man fed up with religion who receives power from the devil and leads a sort of crusade against humanity, plunging the world into darkness, before finally losing his mortal soul to the devil after all is done. It’s a well written story with a decent variety of songs that back up each chapter. None of the musicianship or songwriting is mind-blowing, but it’s certainly very strong, and the rhythm section puts down some quite unique (for the time) beats.
I feel I should enjoy this album more than I do, but despite the awesome concept and genre being right up my ally, it just doesn’t strike home. The riffs are very rhythmic and unmemorable, somehow they are missing both the edge of Thrash as well as the melody of Power Metal. That aside it is very great stuff, a strong concept album played in a style unique at the time.

셀프 타이틀 앨범으로 데뷔한 Iced Earth는 이듬해 바로 두 번째 앨범인 Night of the Stormrider을 발표했다. 1년 사이에 보컬과 드러머의 변동이 있었음에도 앨범이 나오는 데에는 그리 긴 시간이 걸리지 않았다. 당시 이 밴드에서 전권을 휘두르고 있었던 Jon Schaffer가 얼마나 창작력이 불타오르고 있었는지는 알 만하다. 짧은 기간안에 그는 빠진 멤버의 빈자리를 채울 뮤지션을 구하는 와중에 작곡까지 완벽히 도맡아 이 훌륭한 앨범을 제작해낸 것이다. 그러한 과정이 상당히 긴박했던 모양인지, Night of the Stormrider는 Iced Earth의 어떠한 작품보다도 타이트한 긴장감이 넘쳐 흐른다. 아마도 제작 기간이 더 길었더라면, 이토록 생동감 넘치는 작품이 되지 못했을지도 모른다. 칼날 같은 리프는 80년대 Thrash Metal의 유산으로 날렵하게 앨범 전체를 쉴새없이 누비면서 팽팽한 긴장감을 조장하고 있으며, 묵직한 멜로디는 그러한 리프에 실려 작품 속에 생생한 생동력을 불어넣고 있다.

빈틈이 없다. 치밀하다. 데뷔앨범에서부터 알아본 떡잎이지만 이렇게 기름지게 치밀한 헤비메탈 앨범이 또 있을까 싶다. 멤버변동이 너무 잦은것은 아쉽지만 이 앨범에만 참여했더 John Greely도 이 음반과 잘 어울린다. 앨범의 가장 큰 매력은 역시나 속도감 있는 트윈기타와 드럼의 딱 드러맞는 멜로디다. 첫트랙부터 느껴지는 서늘한 기운이 앨범 전체를 감싸고는 있지만 악기들이 유기적으로 철저하게 조화된 멜로디는 아무 밴드나 만들어낼수 있는것이 아니다. 밴드의 대표는 존 샤퍼가 대단한 인물임을 새삼 다시 깨닫게 해준 앨범이다. 처음에 iced earth라는 밴드를 알게 됬을땐 대단하다까지라고는 생각을 안하고 그냥 스래쉬 메탈밴드구나 정도만 생각했는데 이 초창기 앨범들을 들으며 이들의 위대함을 기린다.

인상깊었던 2번트랙을 제외하곤 특별한 점이 없는 앨범. 91년도 치곤 녹음상태도 별로고, 2기타임에도 사운드가 두껍지 않아서 데뷔앨범과 큰 차이를 느끼지 못했다.

"Night of the Stormrider" combines Power/Thrash Metal with epic moments & structures. John Schaffer write relentless thrash riffs, only to stop for further melodic interludes within the song, but that only adds power to the monstrous attack force. John Greenly is actually a pretty good singer, regardless of what some people think. He has plenty of depth to his voice and has quite a vocal range.

탄탄한 구성과 묵직하고 멜로딕한 리프로 채워진 뛰어난 스래쉬 앨범 명반으로 평가받는 Burnt Offerings 보다 음악,녹음 상태도 좋다.Iced Earth 앨범중 가장 좋게 들었다.

참 재미없는 헤비메탈. 스래쉬메탈이라기에는 리프가 너무 구리고 파워메탈이라기에는 멜로디가 너무 구려서 취향에 맞지 않습니다. 오히려 본작이 나오기 이전 시대의 명반들이 더 다이나믹하고 더 힘이 넘치기에 시대착오적인 느낌도 듭니다. 한껏 폼잡고 멋드러지게 시작하는 오프닝 트랙하며, 일단 데뷔작보다는 나아졌지만 건조함과 지루함의 연속입니다.
