Black Sabbath's debut studio album is widely regarded as the first Metal album with dark lyrics for the time of release. Album was recorded in a single twelve-hour session on 16 October 1969 and released on 13 February 1970 by Vertigo Records. Aside from the bells, thunder and rain sound effects added to the beginning of the opening track and the double-tracked guitar solos, there were virtually no overdubs added to the album.

13일의 금요일같은 분위기가 충만한 1번 때문에 듣게 된 앨범. 듣다보면 네 사람의 초일류 음악가가 빚어내는 4번에 빠져들고, 더 듣다보면 모든 트랙이 다 좋아지는 신기한 앨범. 더 신기한 건 같은 해에 이런 명반이 또 나온다는 것.

Black Sabbath 삼위일체 한곡만으로도 이미 끝났다.

It's like wathcing my ancestors' life through bookshelves. The thing is, all of them are alive and they're idling away with their grandchildren talking about glorious old days which now have become grand folktales. Man, what a generation.

어제인가 나온 오지오스본 형님의 앨범을 듣고나서 그의 전설의 시작점인 이 앨범이 생각나서 다시 들어보니 정말 천국과도 같은 기분입니다

This is where it all started. the intro still sends a shiver down my spine.

역사적 영향력은 두말할 것도 없을 것이다. 1번 트랙은 '블랙'이라는 개념 그 자체인 듯하다.

The first time I laid eyes on this album, I felt like I had already been in that scene standing over by the water. Every time I listen to it I have the feeling that I'm all alone and it's playing just for me. The composition is so creative and playful. Also, this is where metal begins for me, as well as doom in particular. Exhilarating music.

앨범을 들어보면 이들이 준비를 상당히 많이 했다는 것을 느낄 수 있다. 특히 사운드의 색다른 연출에 집중하고 있다. 쟁쟁한 경쟁자들이 많던 당시 분위기를 생각하면 차별화하지 않고서는 미디어의 주목을 받기 어려웠을 것이다. 오지는 개성은 있지만 로버트 플랜트나 이언 길런처럼 노래할 수는 없었다. 그러나 이 밴드의 음악에는 역시 오지가 어울린다.

2집에 비해 하드 락의 잔재가 남아 있지만 무겁고 우울한 리프가 기존의 그것과 구별된다

최초의 메탈 앨범이라는 역사적 가치만으로도 100점이 모자라다. 그 상징성을 제외하고 들어도 충분한 음악성이 있다.
