1989년도에 브라질에서 결성한 이 전설의 블랙/데스메탈 밴드 Mystifier...

​사실 난 이 밴드를 꽤나 거슬러 올라가며 접하고 있다.

가장 먼저 접했던 것이 1996년에 나온 이들의 3집 The World Is So Good That Who Made It Doesn't Live Here였고, 당시 이름만 알던 이들, 그래서 언제나 내 위시리스트 상위권이었던 이들의 3집은 꽤나 기쁨으로 다가왔다.

다만 기쁨으로 다가온 것은 손에 쥐었을 때 까지의 이야기였다. 그 3집이 들려준 블랙/데스메탈의 사운드는 '기쁨'같은 단어로는 표현이 안 될 수준이었다. 내가 상상하는, 늘 이상향으로 꼽던 그 블랙/데스메탈의 진수가 여기 담겨있었다고 해도 과언이 아니었다. 그 꽉 찬 밀도와 담백함, 탄탄한 견고함이 주는 묵직한 신념의 표현방식이라는 것은... 이렇게나 고급스럽고 사악할 수 있구나...하는 느낌으로, 거의 경이롭기까지 할 정도의 충격이었다.

그래서 이후 1989년도의 데모 재발매반 Tormenting The Holy Trinity에 이어 1집 Wicca까지 듣게 되었다. (그리고 기쁘게도 내 뒤로는 아직 2001년, 2019년 나온 이들의 4집, 5집이 쌓인채 플레이될 날 만을 기다리고 있다.)

1집 Wicca의 감동은 가장 먼저 접했던 3집 The World Is So Good That Who Made It Doesn't Live Here에 비할만큼이나 경이로운 것이었다. 이 2집 Goetia는 그 사악함이 얼마나 1집에 있어서 더 '구체화'되었는가, 3집 이전에 얼마나 '순수하게' 완성되어 있었는가를 증명한다.

악령의 소환을 뜻하는 단어인 Goetia, 그 의미에 걸맞게 이 앨범은 지독하게도 음습한 사악함이 넘쳐흐른다. 정말로 사탄의 주문이랄 수 밖에 없을 그 보컬의 귀신들린 속삭임은 역대 어느 블랙/데스메탈 밴드도 주지 못했을 불경스러움의 끝을 보여준다.

​1번곡, 알레이스터 크로울리를 표현한 곡의 가사를 보자...

The Deification

​이러한 정말로 뱀의 혓바닥 같은 기도문이 귓 속에 속삭이는 느낌이란 굉장한 어둠, 그 자체가 빚어낸 의식의 느낌을 준다.

2번곡의 가사를 보자, 이 사악한 악녀의 기도문이란 입으로 담기 어려울 정도로 추악하고 외설스럽다.

"Two candles of human fat illuminate my altar
The great omnipotent goat sits on the pentagram
In my left hand a magick sword of black handle
And on the table a golden chalice with blood

​My satanic ritual is beginning...

In my prophane ceremony of submission to the evil
I perform it dressed as the devil
My disciples devote themselves to terror, joy and sensuality
I prepare the hosts of communion with flour, excrements,
Pus and blood of menstruation
They use it as artificial anus and vagina
They copulate it ferociously
Shouting that they're sodomizing jesus and deflorating the virgin."

​여느 곡들이 다 그렇다. 거기에 그 비밀스러운 강령술을 표현한 기타솔로는 귀신들린 이의 눈 희번덕임과 다를 바 없다. 모든 부분의 주제가 이토록 간결하게 한 의식을 향하고 있다. 블랙/데스메탈이라 해서 머리를 미친듯이 흔드는게 아니라 그저 닥치고 몸을 숨긴채 들킬까봐 숨소리 죽여가며 목도하는 광경, 그와 같은 감상의 음악이다.

6번곡 The Realm of Antichristus를 보라.

​"While the night falls a gloomy mist covers the earth

The holy symbols tremble and the glitter of joy is sad
The lord's son of evil soon will be among us

Antichristus will come. The bells begin to ring solemnly

​이 앨범은 그 자체로 성서다. -악에 대해서- 시편도 담겨있고 레위기처럼 의식에 대한 기록도 담겨있다. 신앙고백도 있고 계시록의 예언도 담겨있다.

무저갱의 선지자들과 뱀의 제자들은 그에 대해 보고 들은것을 기록하였다. 그것이 음악으로 연주된다고 할때, 그 나팔을 불 천사가 Mystifier이다.

​어느 곡 하나 버릴 부분이 없다는 말도 진부하다. 원래 대단한 의식일수록 철저한 관리와 체계, 순서에 의해서 정례화 되어야 하기 마련이다. 감히 약식으로 행할 수 없는 신비한 의식...

북유럽에 Mayhem이 있었다면 남미에서는 Mystifier가 있었다. 그리고 이들의 1, 2, 3집은 그 자체로 거대한 '종교적' 악의 경전이라 일컫기에 부족함이 없을 것이다.
