1986년에 발표된 Saxon의 Rock the Nations는 이들의 여덟 번째 정규 앨범이자, NWOBHM의 한 축을 담당하던 밴드가 새로운 방향성을 모색하던 과도기적 작품으로 평가된다. 당시 기존 베이시스트 Steve Dawson의 탈퇴와 함께 밴드 내부에 변화의 조짐이 있었고, 사운드적으로도 초기의 거친 에너지와 강렬함보다는 좀 더 라디오 친화적이고 하드 록적인 요소가 강조된다. 특히 미국 시장을 염두에 둔 듯한 세련된 프로덕션과 멜로디 중심의 곡 구성은, Saxon이 자신들의 사운드를 대중적으로 조정하려 했던 의도를 드러낸다. 앨범의 오프닝 트랙인 Rock the Nations는 직선적인 리프와 앤썸성 높은 코러스로 무장하며, 밴드의 아이덴티티를 선언하듯 웅장하게 출발하지만, 이어지는 곡들에서는 그 기세가 다소 흔들린다. One of Saxon's weaker efforts. They almost completely succumb to commercial arena rock here, though Battle Cry is strangely one of their heaviest songs yet.
