My most played album #389. Megadeth - Peace Sells But Who's Buying. The second album put thrash into the mainstream. 1,000,000 thrashers out there bought it! Released on September 19, 1986 feel old yet. LOL. It's on everybody's best list. Guitar Players #24 album of all time, Robert Dimery's 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Martin Popoff's Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums of All Time, Kerrang the 100 Greatest Rock Albums. Great songs "Wake Up Dead", "The Conjuring", "Peace Sells", "Devils Island", "Good Mourning/Black Friday", "Bad Omen", "I Ain't Superstitious" and "My Last Words". Play it loud!

As a huge fan of Thrash Metal, Megadeth strangely never hit the marks I love in this kind of music. To their – mostly Dave’s – credit, the songwriting and solos are great, and the riffs are not far behind. However, where the band always lost me is in their delivery and atmosphere. Dave’s not a good vocalist, but that’s not what bothers me, as raspy shouting is something I enjoy. The problem is that not only does he struggle to create any sort of memorable hooks or verses, but he also writes some bad lyrics. The delivery on most songs is sarcastic, sometimes angry but all too often it just sounds like he’s yelling for the sake of yelling without any conviction or thought behind the words.
The music actually matches this – while as I said, the musicianship is really good, there’s really no atmosphere or emotion being conveyed. There are great moments like the openings to Good Mourning and Bad Omen, both having a more ominous and serious atmosphere. However, most of the time it just sounds like the band is jamming out to earn their dollar, which is not something I want in Thrash. It’s not dark, and the anger present is only very surface-level “I hate paying my taxes” kind of anger.

메탈을 듣는다고 하는 사람들중 Megadeth라는 밴드의 이름을 들어보지 않은 사람은 없다. 그만큼 이들의 음반은 네임벨류뿐만 아니라 메탈을 이야기할 때 빠져서는 안될 중요한 밴드다. 그리고 그들의 더욱 유명세를 떨친 앨범이라면 그들의 4번째 풀렝스 앨범인 Rust in Peace로 메탈계에서 유명한 위치를 차지함으로 80년대말 90년대 초 메탈 르네상스를 이끌었다고 말을 할 수 있다. 그만큼 그들의 사운드는 다른 메탈과는 차별화된 연주력을 보여주면서 많은 인기와 부를 누렸다고 볼 수 있다. 그러나 그들의 초기작은 그 당시 오버그라운드로 올라갈려고 하는 형태의 음악이 아닌 스래쉬의 가장 기본적인 속성 즉 aggression과 Violenty를 보유한 확실한 80년대의 스래쉬를 보여주고 있다는 점을 간과해서는 안되는 점이다. Metallica가 스래쉬적인 사운드를 거세시키고 헤비함으로 승부를 걸려고 할 때 이들은 철저하게 스래쉬적인 사운드로 이끌어내면서 스래쉬 사운드의 고급화에 선두를 섰다. 특히 테크니컬 스래쉬라고 하는 사운드에 메인으로 들어가면서 그들은 좀 더 테크닉적인 사운드와 연주력을 보여주면서 기존의 스래쉬의 단순한 곡구성을 좀 더 복잡다양하게 변화를 주게 된 계기라고 볼 수가 있다.

제목에서만큼이나 왠지 사회적으로 진지한 음악을 하고자 하는게 느껴지는 앨범,
1집에서 느껴졌던 그의 개인적인 분노가 이제는 사회적인 비판으로 확장된것인가
평화를 팔지만 과연 누가 살까..? 라는 의문의 제목과 파괴되는 건물의 쟈켓사진은
말 그대로 Mega Death 를 연상케 한다.
1집에서 메가데스만의 냄새를 가까이서 좀 맡으려고 노력해야 느낄수 있었다면
본작에서는 Wake Up Dead 시작부터 전개되는 그 구린 기타 사운드의 질이 아 드디어 이게
메가데스구나! 라고 감탄하며 어디서든 이들의 매력을 느낄수 있는 메가데스식 음반이다.
개인적으로 지글지글한 싸구려틱한 전개의 매력이 있는 크리스 폴란드의 기타사운드를 참 좋아하는데 The System Has Failed를 통해 들려준 바로도 분명 이 지글지글한 매력은 크리스 폴란드에게도
많은 역할이 있었다는것을 알수 있다. 정말이지 머스테인과 크리스 폴란드의 조합은 마티 프리드먼 못지 않게 잘 어울리고 마음에 든다.

[완벽에 가까운, Megadeth의 두번째 앨범이자 두번째 명작]
'Metallica에서 쫓겨난 기타리스트가 결성한 밴드'라는 흥미로운 꼬리표 외에도 독특한 음악 세계를 펼쳤던 1집으로 그 이름을 널리 알렸던 Megadeth가 이어 발표한 2집입니다. 같은 해에 발매된 다른 'Big 4'들의 명반들, 즉 Metallica의 "Master of Puppets", Slayer의 "Reign in Blood", Anthrax의 "Among The Living"과 같이 세워 놓기에는 약간이나마 부족한 감이 없지 않지만(이 앨범이 못나서가 아니라 Rust In Peace의 존재때문에...), 음악에 있어 천재적인 기량을 보여주는 Dave Mustaine만의 감각이 역시나 유감없이 발휘된 대명작이라고 할수 있겠습니다. Dave Mustaine이 벌써 1집부터 추구했던 'Intellectual Thrash' 사운드를 더욱 굳건히 확립시킴과 동시에, 여타 밴드와는 이제 완전히 선을 그어 버리며 Megadeth만의 음악을 전개하기 시작했다는 의의 또한 지니고 있지요.

개인적으로 메가데스를 다른 스래시메탈 밴드들하고 구분 짓는 요소는 치밀하고 복잡한 연주력을 바탕으로 한 테크니컬하고도 지적인 사운드와 스래시메탈 특유의 광폭한 사운드를 섞어서 조화시키는 악곡구성력이라고 생각한다. 메가데스의 이러한 음악적 요소는 1985년 데뷔앨범 Killing is my business....And business is good에서부터 나타났었지만 "우리는 이런 음악을 하는 밴드다"식으로 맛보기로 들려준게 다였다. 하지만 메가데스는 비르투오소적인 연주력을 가진 멤버들의 역량을 바탕으로(상당히 과소평가 받지만 상당히 독특한 기타세계를 펼치는 리더인 데이브 머스테인, 원래 재즈베이스주자를 꿈꾸던 데이빗 엘렙슨,재즈퓨전 기타리스트인 크리스 폴랜드,재즈퓨전 드러머인 갈 사무엘슨) 이듬해인 1986년에 온 메탈씬을 충격으로 몰고갈 앨범을 발표하는데 이 앨범이 바로 그 앨범이다. 이 앨범에서 메가데스는 그 누구도 시도 할수 없을 정도의 치밀함과 전위성을 자랑하는 스래시메탈/스피드메탈 사운드를 난사하고 있다. 단 한개의 기타리프를 여러번 꼬아서 극한의 스피드감을 자랑하는 오프닝 트랙인 Wake Up Dead, 고차원적인 악곡구성으로 마치 복잡한 기계만들듯이 정교하게 스피드감을 쌓아가는(?) 신비한 분위기의 The Con ... 89년(??)쯤 접한 앨범이다. 앨범 자켓처럼 굉장히 어둡고 세기말적인 분위기의 곡들로 채워진 명반이다. 머스테인의 신경질적이고 분노에 가득찬 정신세계를 알 수 있다. 그때 당시 어린 나는 이 앨범을 왜그리 좋아했을까?? 지금도 wake up dead, the conjuring, black friday, my last words는 자주 듣는다.

Honestly an extremely overrated record, sure it's good but good is just barely scraping it for this album, honestly Dave Mustaine's vocals are just abysmal and even in the good tracks like Bad Omen and Peace Sells were still sub par, the guitar solos are the saving grace because I guess that's the main part I liked but this album really is just forgettable at best.

훌륭한 테크닉 + 매력적인 멜로디. 그러나, 하필 보컬리스트가 데이브 머스테인이었다. 아무리 몸매가 완벽해도 얼굴이 별로라면 좋은 점수를 주긴 힘든게 사실이다. 할망구 목소리를 듣다보면 짜증이 치밀어 오른다. 아마 이 앨범을 싫어하는 분들은 공감하실 것이라 믿는다.

I'll get to the music, but first I have to say this is another example of Edward Repka making metal history through an album cover that communicates a full ton through body language. Anyway, of course this album is wonderful. I love the title track like everyone, but Devil's Island and My Last Words are just pure bliss as well.

A hell of a beast album. Not that speed as RIP but the heavy metal touch of this album was great. The guitar work in "Wake Up Dead" and the catchy riff in "Peace Sells" are the highlights for me. This album is behind some other Megadeth other works but still fantastic. 90/100

4집과 함께 최고 음반으로 평가받지만 저는 역시 2집이 제일 좋다고 생각합니다 그 이유로는 전곡이 대단한건 말할 필요도없고 머스테인 특유의 껄렁대는듯한 보이스와 1집에 비해 살짝이나마 절제하여 더욱 완곡해진 곡 구성에 메가데스 특유의 어두운 분위기까지 가득 점철된 들을수록 진국인 앨범이라고 생각합니다. 아직도 1번트랙의 솔로만 들으면 감격이!!!

무려 4번에 걸쳐서 산 메가데스 최고의 명반으로 꼽고 싶다. 그리고 전체 락 역사를 통해서도 훌륭한 앨범이라 지칭. 반복구매를 해도 돈이 아깝지 않았으며 가치있는 행위라고 생각한다. 25주년을 들으며 코멘트 남기는 중. 25주년의 제일 큰 의미는 87년도 라이브cd가 아닐까 싶다. 제발 40주년 정도는 또 다른 컨텐츠를 가지고 발매해주길. CP, GS만세 만세

스래쉬 4인방에서 결국에 살아남은건 메가데스인듯. 이 앨범이 2026년에 발매 되었다고 치더라도 아주 세련되고 미래지향적인 스래쉬앨범이라고 호들갑 떨지 않았을까? 메가데스는 스래쉬의 과거이자 미래이며 현존 최강 스래쉬 아닌가 쉽다. 메가데스보다 더 잘하는 스래쉬 밴드 과연 누가 있나? 벡터 빼고

2nd best Megadeth album. Way better than the debut. Rust in Peace is better than this. It is dragged down by the horrible cover song I Ain't Superstitious. Highlights: Good Morning /Black Friday, Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells and My Last Words. Fantastic guitar work by Mustaine and Poland. My Last Words and Wake Up Dead have my favorite Mustaine solos.

테크니컬 스레쉬 메탈이 무엇인지 제대로 들려주는 명반. 엄청난 속도감의 기타가 탁월함. Rust in Peace와 Peace Sells 중 무엇이 Megadeth 최고의 앨범인지는 개인 취향에따라 갈릴듯. My Last Words는 개인적으로 Megadeth의 곡들 중 가장 좋아함.
