1978년에 발표된 Rush의 여섯 번째 정규 앨범 Hemispheres는 밴드의 창작적 정점 중 하나로 꼽힌다. 이 시기 Rush는 하드 록 기반에서 시작해 점차 프로그레시브 록의 복잡성과 예술성을 흡수하면서 자신들만의 독자적인 스타일을 구축하고 있었다. 전작 A Farewell to Kings에서 이미 Mellotron과 신디사이저 등 새로운 사운드에 도전했으며, 이 앨범에서는 그 실험들이 더욱 통합적이고 구조적인 방향으로 발전한다. Hemispheres는 사운드, 주제, 구성 측면에서 모두 거대한 야심을 담고 있으며, 이는 단순한 록 앨범을 넘어선 하나의 서사적 예술작품으로 받아들여진다. 무엇보다 Rush의 세 멤버, Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, Neil Peart가 모두 기량의 정점을 찍은 시기로, 그들의 기술과 감성이 고도로 융합된 결과물이 이 앨범이다.

My most played album # 90. Rush - Hemispheres! I love Rush I was wondering why only 2 Rush albums in my top 100? So I decided to listen to more Rush and I saw why I listen to each album less. It's because they are so good. Their early albums are raw and lots of guitar I love them, the middle albums have there best songs, the later albums are really fresh, I need to play more. 27 albums when I'm in a Rush mood what do I play? Unlike so many bands breaking up and getting back together and changing band members Rush is just great all the time. So many great albums so little time! Play it loud or don't play it a all!

전체적인 런닝타임은 36분에 불과하지만 그 안에 18분, 9분여의 대곡이 포함되어있고 쉴틈없이 전개되는 유기적인 곡들은 듣는내내 긴장감을 느껴지게 만드는 매력이 있다. 프로그래시브한 성향이 이전부터 나탔지지만 역시 이 앨범에서 보여주는 하드락과 프로그래시브적인 요소의 조합은 이후 복잡한 구성의 프로그래시브메탈에 많은 영향을 주었을것이다. 간단히 말하면 이 앨범은 완벽하다. 너무 하드락적이어서 지루한면도 전혀없고, 너무 프로그래시브해서 복잡하고 시끄럽고 조잡한점도 전혀느껴지지 않는다. 시간이 어느새 후딱 지나가버린다는 표현은 이런앨범을 듣고 해주면되겠다.

90-95 그냥 훌륭한 앨범. 초기때보다 앨범 전반적으로 더 좋게 들리는 건 사실이다. 1,2,4 특히 더 좋았음

드림시어터의 존페트루치 최애 Rush 음반이라고 합니다. 듣다보면 드림시어터가 확실히 많은 영향을 받았다는게 느껴지네요

어떻게 이런 음악을 만들었을까?? Moving pictures보다 심한 충격을 받았다. 특히 여러 종류의 나무를 빗대어 권력층을 비판한 The trees가 경이로웠다.
