Paradise Lost의 두 번째 앨범 Gothic은 새로운 장르의 이정표를 뚜렷이 세웠다. Gothic은 Paradise Lost의 대표작으로 지금까지도 고딕 메탈 팬들의 기억 속에 선명히 남아 있다. 그러나 이들은 자신들이 만들어 놓은 틀에 안주 하기를 이미 초기부터 거부했다. Gothic에서 완성된 하나의 전형은 바로 다음 앨범인 Shades of God에서부터 조금씩 변화의 조짐을 보이고 있다. 물론 아직 이 앨범에서 보이는 모습은 여전히 정통 고딕 메탈의 범주에서 벗어나 있지 않다. 전작에 비해 사운드는 약간 가벼워진 감은 있지만, 여전히 어두우면서도 무겁다. 그러나 전반적인 곡의 색조는 확실히 변했다. 정적인 형태의 곡들은 좀더 동적으로 변화했으며, 멜로디는 확실히 밝으면서도 듣기 시워졌다. 어떻게 보면 별거 아닌 변화로 인식될 수도 있겠지만, 이들의 후기작을 들어봤다면 이 앨범에서 보이는 면모는 상당히 의미심장하게 다가올 것이다. Shades of God는 마치 Paradise Lost의 대대적인 변신을 예고하는 듯하다. Shades of God는 이후에 밴드가 발표한 Draconian Times, One Second로 대표되는 뉴웨이브 고딕 메탈로 가는 여정의 징검다리처럼 느껴진다.

확실히 전작보다 좋아졌다. 지루함,난해함,음질의 문제 이 세가지는 확연히 개선되었다. 전작이 창작의 날개가 자라나는 괴정이었다면 이 앨범에선 그 날개가 모두 자란 느낌이다. 이제 비상하려고 하는 앨범. 보컬도 그로울링과 헷필드 스타일의 중간이다.

Uncommon opinion, but I like this more than Gothic. The Doom elements are better established, and the riffs bring some excellent foreboding.

prechod od deathu k doom/gothic metalu. Obsahuje výrazné piesne ako " As I Die", "Pity the Sadness",..., ale aj menej originálne + zvuk mohol byť výraznejší/agresívnejší
