Advance promotional LPs for the album were sent out by Peaceville, hand-numbered and signed by all the band members.

Gothic is pretty much where Gothic Metal got it’s name and signature sound, especially the title track. Of course, the majority of this album isn’t actually Gothic Metal – rather straightforward Death Doom is the name of the game here. They add some female vocals and melodic lines every so often, but otherwise this is pretty stripped down and basic.

My favorite part of this album are actually Nick’s vocals. Those are some monstrous howls right there, and the heavy reverb ensure they create a great atmosphere on their own. I appreciate this one a lot more than when I first heard it, but I still see it as an overrated stepping stone simply leading the way to truly great Death Doom and Gothic Metal that other bands would perfect.

Gothic은 단순히 한 밴드의 실험적인 2집이 아니라, 하나의 새로운 장르가 태어나는 결정적인 순간이었다. 당시 대부분의 익스트림 메탈은 속도, 파괴력, 공격성에 집착했지만, Paradise Lost는 그 흐름에서 과감히 벗어나 절망과 비극, 고독 같은 감정들을 음악의 핵심으로 삼았다. 이를 표현하기 위해 그들은 클래식한 멜로디, 우울한 기타 리프, 여성 보컬, 오케스트라적 키보드 같은 비금속적인 요소들을 적극 도입했고, 이로 인해 전통적인 데스/둠 팬들에게는 낯설지만 독창적인 사운드를 완성했다. 이 앨범은 서로 이질적이라 여겨졌던 장르들 사이에서 놀라운 접점을 만들어냈고, 결국 '고딕 메탈'이라는 새로운 스타일을 위한 초석이 되었다. 실제로 ‘고딕’이라는 장르명이 이 앨범에서 유래했을 정도로, Gothic은 상징성과 영향력 모두를 갖춘 작품이다.

Paradise Lost의 데뷔작 Lost Paradise는 90년대 초반 범람하던 Death Metal의 조류에 속해있었다. 본작 Gothic은 이들을 영국 Doom Metal의 선두격으로 격상시킨 두 번째 정규작으로 'Gothic Metal' 이라는 어원을 촉발시킨 촉매제 역할을 수행했다는 것만으로도 큰 의미를 부여할 수 있다. 차가움, 묵직함으로 일관했던 전작에 비해, 클래시컬한 여성보컬, 멜로디컬한 전개를 기본 골격으로 하는 기타사운드, 적시적소에 터저나오는 그로울링으로 극단적인 드라마틱함을 제시하며 Gothic Metal의 불씨를 당겼다. Peacevile에서의 마지막 작품으로 본작의 성공으로 Music For Nations와 석장의 앨범계약을 체결하게 된다.

단지 고딕메탈의 시작이라는 점에서 너무 과대평가 되는게 아닐까 싶다. 타이틀 곡을 제외하면 난해하기도 하고 지나치게 단순하며 우울해지려고 노력하듯 쥐어짜는 느낌이 없지않다. 음질도 1집보다 후퇴했다. Host 앨범만큼이나 손이 안가는 이들의 앨범.

After some minutes this album worked its magic on me, so yes it's super enjoyable. The gothic moments stand out as some of the brightest. Not that it's a bad thing, but I don't see those moments as so original, but as some Joy Division influence. Also the death doom is very good.

고딕메탈 수작이래서 사서 들어보니 대박이다. 느림의 미학속에 모든 메탈의 매력이 다 들어있다. shattered 를 특히 좋게 들었다.

축 처지고 절망에 가까운 심연을 살려낸 엘범. 메탈이 빠른 속도가 없더라도 이런 질리지 않는 사운드도 가능합니다. 특히 약방의 감초인 심금을 뒤흔드는 리드 기타와 밴드의 창의력을 되도록 살린 부가요소인 오케스트라와 뜬금없는 불협화음도 맘에 드는군요.
