Dream Theater는 유명 밴드의 커버를 상당히 많이 하는 편이다. 그러나 최고의 테크니션이라는 명성에 비해 실망스러운 결과를 내놓는 경우도 종종 있다. Metallica의 Master of Puppets는 대표적인 사례로 꼽힌다. 일단 Metallica의 트윈 기타 체제를 기타 한 대와 키보드로 대체한다는 발상부터가 놀랍다. Jordan Rudess의 키보드 실력은 메틀 전체에서도 비길 데 없는 굴지의 실력가라는 점은 추호도 의심할 여지가 없다. 그러나 키보드의 태생적 한계를 넘어설 수는 없다. 키보드는 본질적으로 Thrash Metal과는 맞지 않는다. Rudess의 키보드가 이렇게 잉여스럽게 들릴 수 있다는 사실을 처음으로 체감했다. 하지만 이 앨범에서 가장 큰 에러는 James LaBrie의 보컬링이다. Rudess의 키보드가 아무리 스래쉬 메틀에 어울리지 않는다고 해도 LaBrie의 목소리가 안맞는 것에 비교하면 양반이다. 이것은 LaBrie의 보컬 실력과는 별개로 Metallica 자체와 안맞는다고 볼 수밖에 없다. Deep Purple 커버나 Metallica 만큼이나 헤비한 Iron Maiden에서 LaBrie의 보컬링이 상당히 잘 어울렸던 것을 고려해보면 Metallica와 Dream Theater는 궁합이 안맞는다고 해도 무방하다. 이쯤 되면 밴드를 탓하기도 뭐하다. 두번 다시 Metallica 커버는 하지 않았으면 좋겠다.

명반을 재해석도 아닌 그냥 별뜻없이 재미삼아 오피부틀렉으로 만든 의도가 다분하나 신디가 세컨기타의 빈틈을 메꿔주지 못하는게 아쉽고 기타사운드도 두텁지도 못하고 라브리에의 보컬성향과 이곡들과는 전혀 맞지를 않는다. 뭐 그냥 그렇게 흘러간다..

라브리에의 감성파 보컬과는 완전히 동떨어진 커버. 재미로 만든 엘범인것으로 보이나 밴드 역량을 생각하면 이런데 귀한 시간 쓰는것은 아까운것 같습니다. 차라리 Symphony X가 솔로를 쬐금 네오클레시컬하게 수정해서 했으면 더 좋았을것 같습니다. 러셀 알렌의 파워 넘치는 보컬은 오히려 더 어울릴 수도 있거든요.

드림씨어터는 복잡하고 화려해야 그 진가가 드러나지, 파워와 스피드만으로는 썩 뛰어나다고 할 수 없다는 것을 느꼈다. 개인적으로 이 앨범에서만큼은 라스가 포트노이보다 나았다. 내가 좋아하는 앨범(MOP)이라 5점, 좋아하는 밴드(DT)라 5점을 추가했다.

이건 라브리에 엿먹이려고 낸 앨범 같다. 어울리지도 않는데다 컨디션도 엉망인지 3번곡에서는 제대로 삑사리까지 내준다. 연주야 잘들 하지만 이건 좀 아닌것 같다.
