One of the most underrated metal albums in my opinion. This album fully satiates my desire for decent 'progness' in a blackened way.   May 3, 2023
Waiting for the King
level 14 Metal Addiction   40/100
One of the worst metal albums I've ever listened to. I can't believe that this album was released this year.... I have no idea how to describe the awfulness of this album. In short, this release has a jaw-dropping quality to make you laugh.   May 2, 2023

Paenil Era is the third Romanian band I've tried listening to after Negură Bunget and Dordeduh. It is utterly a melodic release, but not blackened enough compared to other black metal releases. The delicate tremolo riffs with post-metal influences vitalise each track, giving uplifting and dark energies to the album at the same time in a contrasting way. Overall, it would be an interesting release for those who love the melodic side of blackened metal.   Apr 23, 2023
Harboured

level 14 Metal Addiction   75/100
This album drew my attention because the two members of Allegaeon participated in this release. Harboured did not replicate technical prog metal elements from Allegaeon, taking a totally new direction to build their musicality. So, you will be disappointed in this release if you expect something similar to Allegaeon. All the musical features I've found in this release sound a bit disjointed with each other, but it is an attractive release that deserves your attention.   Apr 22, 2023
Trial by Chaos
preview  Raider preview  Trial by Chaos (2023)
level 14 Metal Addiction   80/100
This one would be a good album for those who love the aggressiveness of death metal and the grooviness/speed of thrash metal. An entertaining release combining those aforementioned musical features successfully. But I was also a bit bored of listening to the repetitive musical patterns that prevailed from the beginning to the end. It feels like a starting pitcher throws 4-seam fastballs only till the end of the ball game. Regardless of the downsides, it is a good release.   Apr 22, 2023
Saturnian Bloodstorm
level 14 Metal Addiction   75/100
I have mixed feelings over this release. I cannot say that this one is a good release, but it would be an entertaining release to some fans. The reason is that I feel like this release is the downgraded version of Immortal's efforts. I failed to find the distinct musical feature that Lamp of Murmuur did not rip off Immortal's musicality. On the other hand, those who love 'Immortal-like sounding' BM albums would love to listen to this album.   Apr 18, 2023

level 14 Metal Addiction   65/100
Other listeners might disagree with my opinion, but most prog fans would agree this album is not an impressive release. This one is a below-than-average album to me. Poor guitar work including sloppy riffs and awful-sounding tones make this album sounds bad as well as the poor job of the keyboardist. The offerings of other band members are not impressive either. More thoroughness in both sound and structure is required to improve the overall quality.   Apr 18, 2023
Triumphs
preview  Foretoken preview  Triumphs (2023)
level 14 Metal Addiction   75/100
In short, this album is miles away from what I expected. But it is a fine release. All tracks are composed based on frenetic, folkish and somewhat symphonic melodicism. Fans who love those features might be mesmerised by death metal enchantment. Also, I greatly appreciate their effort to cover Naglfar's 'I Am Vengeance' as an ending track. It is definitely a killer track you should pay attention to. Again, this album is unimpeachably a fine release for death metal lovers.   Apr 18, 2023
Clamor Luciferi
preview  1782 preview  Clamor Luciferi (2023)
level 14 Metal Addiction   60/100
I have to admit 1782's commitment and devotion to Satanism. But, that is all. You would not get anything from this release except their longing for darkness. The guitar work is quite solid, but there is no memorable musical feature in both sound and structure. It is a ghastly boring and disappointing release.   Apr 17, 2023
Vestigial
preview  Lo! preview  Vestigial (2017)
level 14 Metal Addiction   80/100
It is not easy to find an album categorised in sludge / post-metal with this quality. This album is full of immense power consisting of meaty bass, pummeling drums and head-cracking riffs. It has definitely been improved in both sound and structure without compromising musicality compared to Lo!'s previous effort. Overall, it is an entertaining release.   Apr 17, 2023

Changing the path heading to a different musical direction is a tough job to do for all musicians. It would be much appreciated if the change is successful. On the other hand, it would be contemptible if the change is unsuccessful. Unfortunately, this album is the latter. In my opinion, this release should not be classified in the thrash metal category, because this album is ghastly appalling to be evaluated as a thrash metal album.   Apr 17, 2023
Of Valleys and Mountains
level 14 Metal Addiction   80/100
Attractive-sounding sludge metal album with a progressive metal approach. This album is as beautiful as its album cover. As a debut and the first full-length album of the band, this release sounds a bit roughly composed and somewhat incomplete as a whole, but each track has its moment to shine, which gives a sanguine expectation of musical joy for upcoming tracks to listeners. Overall it is a very good album that shows the potential to offer a more complete release next time.   Apr 17, 2023
The Unfailing Rope
preview  Sunrot preview  The Unfailing Rope (2023)
level 14 Metal Addiction   75/100
The reason why I checked on this album was that a reviewer insisted that this release sounds similar to Dragged Into Sunlight's best effort, 'Hatred for Mankind'. Satanic lyrical themes and screaming vocal works may make this release sound similar to that album. But this release does not have the distinct noise and experimental features that 'Hatred for Mankind' offers. In short, this release may be considered Dragged Into Sunlight's phylactery, but cannot surpass them.   Apr 16, 2023

preview  Metallica preview  72 Seasons (2023)
level 14 Metal Addiction   60/100
It is not the first time that the trash metal legends have come back with dismay. Nevertheless, fans have always had high hopes for them. The reason is that the name, Metallica, means a lot to metal fans and in thrash metal history. Unfortunately, this album is another failure to feed up the fans' ardent wish for thrashing. It is full of monotonous riffs with intuitive and straightforward-sounding approaches, showing the downward spiral of Metallica's musicality.   Apr 15, 2023

Akercocke came back with this sleazy concoction after the long hiatus. They've never ceased to amaze me throughout their career. The technical offering of the band members is brilliant as always. The musical feature that hit me the most is the changes and breaks of tempo. Those features help jazzy and avant-garde structures combine with dreamy, and hallucinating melodies in a progressive metal way. Overall, it is another utterly creative addition to the band's career.   Apr 15, 2023

DHG is one of the bands that adeptly keep pushing the envelope to overcome their musical limitations each time they released a new album. DHG have come back with a sophisticated opus this time too. The musicianship of this album is utterly amazing and surpasses their fifth effort, A Umbra Omega, which was the new musical benchmark in DHG's career. The introspective and anxiety-ridden atmosphere will besiege the listeners through the wistful and bittersweet melodicism.   Apr 15, 2023
Winterreise
preview  Lethvm preview  Winterreise (2023)
level 14 Metal Addiction   75/100
Lethvm have partially replicated Amenra's musicality in sound and structure throughout their career. The use of clean vocals in some tracks is the only visible difference from Amenra in my opinion. Overall, it is better than average as a sludge metal album, but Lethvm would not be regarded highly unless they establish their distinct and ingenious musicality to escape from the shadow of Amenra.   Apr 15, 2023

level 14 Metal Addiction   90/100
It's a great album that offers most of the features that black metal fans are looking for. It's probably the best album so far in Gaerea's career. The vocal works express emotive brutality with vicious rawness in a brilliant way. All tracks are well-composed by a great musicianship, proving that Gaerea have devoted themselves to delving into the aesthetics of black metal. Their real masterpiece will come next time if they keep and develop their musicality.   Apr 12, 2023

level 14 Metal Addiction   65/100
This album is heavy as hell from the beginning to the end. I respect their desire to make their debut album as brutal and savagery as possible. The heavy doom riffs and dark/eerie tonal dissonances successfully crafted a distorted atmosphere, but the vocal sounds like suffering from dysphonia. There was nothing I could get from this release except the dark heaviness and punchiness. This album lacks something to keep the listeners engaged on a deeper level.   Apr 12, 2023

level 14 Metal Addiction   80/100
I don't think it is a typical psychedelic / stoner metal album. It sounds more like prog to me. I love the heavy and bombastic moments of the track, Merged In Dreams - Ne Plus Ultra which makes this release a good album in my opinion. I do remember the first time I listened to Elder's third effort, Lore, which was really impressive. I do not think this album is as good as Lore, but there are some moments that enthral the listeners.   Apr 12, 2023

It's sad to see your favourite artists gradually go down off the peak of their power. Gnaw Their Tongues is the case for me. I've never been impressed by his works since his third effort, An Epiphanic Vomiting Of Blood. Like the album title, it was a kind of musical epiphany to me when I first discovered his third effort. But each time I checked on his new efforts after that, I've always been a bit disappointed. It's a just normal release, considering my expectation for him.   Apr 12, 2023
Reconstruction
preview  Septicflesh preview  Reconstruction (2023)  [EP]
level 14 Metal Addiction   60/100
It's too much.... way too much on symphonic elements. What I like the most about Septicflesh is their musicality based on "metal" with a symphonic approach. Metal is the foundation and the fundamental feature that has made Septicflesh's works sound so good. Symphonic elements are just ornamental backgrounds or supplements to support their musical foundation. This EP is the orchestral variations of the original tracks in the album released in 2022, but....so disappointing.   Apr 11, 2023
We're Still Here
level 14 Metal Addiction   70/100
It's always been hard for me to swallow the music that connotes political messages. In that sense, the HIRS's works (so-called, queer grindcore) have not been easy for me to digest. Their way to propagate their messages is ferocious and relentless in this album. The drum work is insane as well as other instruments that sound raw. But the overall musicianship of this album is too consistent. In other words, too easy to predict, and then monotonous in sound and structure.   Apr 11, 2023
Suspended Animation Dreams
level 14 Metal Addiction   90/100
Psychedelic prog metal at its finest. This album is the dark and doom version of Kayo Dot. All the songs are well composed, having mesmerising and poetic features. The strong musicianship has been shown in this album too. You can hear sax, horns, harmonica, and other metal instruments all combined together in a fantastic way, making acoustically driven prog rock with metal elements. Overall, it is a brilliant album.   Apr 11, 2023

There's a proverb, saying "Do not judge something by its cover". It's true on most occasions in real life. If there's an exception, I would say this album. The album cover looks like your 5-year old nephew's drawing. The quality of the music it contains is exactly the same as the quality of the cover. I can't stop laughing about the use of the sax. This album is the antipodean example of using the sax in metal to the White Ward's great approach to flirting with the sax.   Apr 11, 2023
Legends
preview  Ethereal Riffian preview  Legends (2019)
level 14 Metal Addiction   65/100
The main reason why I have always regarded Ethereal Riffian so highly was the unconventionality with the shamanistic atmosphere the band has always offered. Those unique features have gone missing in this album. Over half of the album is filled up with radio-friendly songs that may help the band sell more records and expand their fan base. That is not bad at all. But fans like me who have high hopes for them will be frustrated by the change in the musicianship in this album.   Apr 9, 2023

The first time I heard about the Gabriel Construct, which is a solo project of Gabby Riccio, was from an interview conducted by some media. I couldn't understand this album back then. I've tried listening to it consistently as my knowledge of music grows. But I've always ended up like "I've found the awesomeness of King Crimson here, but I'm not intelligent enough to fully digest his work". I still feel that way. But the final track has always brought me discordant euphoria.   Apr 3, 2023

As far as I know, this album was one of the first attempts to combine rock and rap along with Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill released in 1986. The attempt itself was courageous. I do not like to restrain a musician's musical freedom in a certain genre... But the quality of this one is preposterous. It is a comedy metal.   Apr 3, 2023

Typical Scandinavian style melodic metal album. Easy to listen to and has a substantial amount of catchy melodies exuding to the end. No bombastic or eye-poping moments. This album just flows without any noticeable defects. Having said that, there are no great features to be applauded by those who have in-depth knowledge about the music in the same category. But, the melody crafting ability is quite noticeable, showing the potential to get better in the next release.   Apr 2, 2023

May 10, 2024
