Additional notes
Originally, Metal Church was formed in 1980 under the name Shrapnel in San Francisco by Kurdt Vanderhoof and others. Lars Ulrich (Metallica) also played in the band in 1981 on a few rehersals but didn't make it into the band, and so he is not considered as one of the past-members. This lineup released a few demos but nothing else. In 1981, Kurdt moved to Washington State and found Craig, Duke, and for a while Tom Weber on drums. Tom was quickly replaced by Kirk Arrington and this lineup recorded an instrumental demo.

After a few unsuccessful vocalist experiences, they found David Wayne, and released the "Four Hymns" demo in 1982. Further demo material from just before and just after Wayne was hired was also recorded though never officially released at the time was made available for free download after being unearthed over 20 years later.

"Four Hymns" got them a recording deal, which prompted Shrapnel to change their name to Metal Church and led to recording two albums. After "The Dark" in 1986, Kurdt Vanderhoof left and was replaced for half a tour by Mark Baker, and then by John Marshall as permanent guitarist. Kurdt would stay much involved in the songwriting process. In 1988, David Wayne left and was replaced by Mike Howe, with whom the next three albums were recorded. In 1994 the band broke up, but reformed in 1998 after finding some tapes from 1986 and releasing a live album. The lineup was David Wayne, Kurdt Vanderhoof, John Marshall, and Brian Wade and Jeff Lake on bass and drums, respectively. This lineup put out the Masterpeace album, and toured once. David Wayne then left the band and was replaced by Ronny Munroe.

Even though Kurdt Vanderhoof didn't record or tour with Metal Church after 1987, he was still considered a part of the band and wrote a lot of their material.

David Wayne passed away on 5/10/2005.It has been reported that he was found dead outside his house on this date, the cause being reported as complications of injuries sustained in a head-on car accident a few months prior.

Unreleased Sampler Track :
"Death Wish" - Northwest Metalfest (1984)

John Marshall was once Metallica's roadie and filled in on rhythm guitar when James Hetfield burned his arm.
