Possessed에 대해서 사람들은 항상 Seven Churches만 말한다. 물론 이 앨범이 가진 의의는 정말 크기는 하다. Death Metal의 효시격인 작품이라 할 수 있기에 중요한 음반이라 할 수 있다. 하지만, 개인적으로는 Seven Churches는 정말 재미없게 들은 작품이었다. 내게 Seven Churches는 머리로는 이해할 수 있어도 가슴으로 받아들이기는 힘든 작품이었다. 데스 메탈씬의 형성에 크나큰 공헌을 한 앨범이지만, Seven Churches를 듣는 것은 수월하지 않았다. 오히려 이들의 작품중에 인상깊게 들은 앨범은 후속작인 Beyond the Gates였다. 좀더 짜임새있는 모양새를 갖춘 이 앨범은 전작이 가진 음악사적인 거창한 의의를 가지고 있지는 못했지만, 좀더 완성도가 높았으며, 듣기에 원만한 작품이었다. 여전히 데스 메탈과 Thrash Metal의 경계에 있는 가운데, 리프 메이킹이나 구성 부분, 프로듀싱에서 Beyond the Gates는 전작보다 훨씬 나은 축에 드는 앨범이라고 할 수 있겠다. 하지만, 인지도에서 본작과 전작은 하늘과 땅 차이가 난다. 국내의 익스트림 메탈 팬들 사이에서 Seven Churches가 고평가를 받고 있는 것에 반해, Beyond the Gates는 거의 관심조차 받지 못하는 실정이다. 이는 해외에서도 딱히 다르진 않다. 국내보다는 해외에서의 인지도가 좀더 나은 상황이지만, 역시 이 앨범은 전작이 지닌 압도적인 위상때문인지 관심의 정도는 낮은 편이다. 작품의 완성도를 고려해봤을 때 이는 아쉽지 않을 수가 없다.

Grand Fundamental Root of Death Metal...

This album gets a lot of flack for being generally weaker than its predecessor, but I heard no drop in quality whatsoever. It’s exactly the same messy, thrashy, raw old school death metal as on the debut. Perhaps it could be critiqued for not innovating at all, but who needs innovation when the music is this good?
