Brave Murder Day는 Katatonia의 팬들로부터 높은 평가를 받는 작품이었지만, 개인적으로는 정말 취향에 안 맞는 앨범이었다. 그 앨범을 얼마나 재미없게 들었는지, 나는 그들의 음악을 한동안 들을 엄두도 못냈을 정도로 지루했다. 그러다가 이들의 음악색이 후기 앨범에서 상당히 변화했다는 소식을 듣고 호기심에 Night Is the New Day를 찾아 들었다. 결과는 만족스러웠다. 이 앨범은 마치 어두운 사운드의 Porcupine Tree를 듣는 듯한 느낌이다. 이들은 Doom/Gothic Metal의 때를 거의 벗어버린 것이었다. 전반적으로 모던한 느낌이 앨범에 전체에 맴돌고 있는데, 앨범에 실린 곡들은 팝적인 감수성까지 머금고 있어 친근한 매력이 잘 느껴진다. 골수 팬들에게 상당히 비판 받는 작품이 되어 버렸지만, 개인적으로는 이 앨범은 매우 만족스럽다. 개인적으로 Katatonia가 이런 작품만 만들었으면 한다. 앞으로도 그들이 과거를 돌아보는 일은 없기를 바란다. 그냥 이 방향으로 쭉 전진했으면 좋겠다.
