Additional notes
Founded by Magnus Pelander, after Norrsken split up, and initially only to record a one-song tribute to Pentagram, who the band continued to be heavily influenced by. The first three albums were noted for their lo-fi sound. The debut album was recorded using vintage analogue equipment, while Firewood and The Alchemist maintained a similar aesthetic while being recorded with more modern equipment.
Witchcraft took an unofficial hiatus of around a year after the touring for The Alchemist was finished, during which time Pelander released a solo EP. Witchcraft then returned with a new five-piece line up for the album Legend, showcasing a far heavier and more modern production style by Jens Bogren.
After touring Legend, Witchcraft again lapsed into inactivity, before Pelander returned with an entirely new three-piece line up for the album Nucleus in early 2016. This line-up did not perform live, and Pelander released his debut solo album later the same year. Since around this time, Witchcraft have become more elusive, with line-up changes only occasionally being announced and often not publicly remarked upon at all.
Pelander later performed some Witchcraft shows with a line-up of Norwegian musicians, before recording the acoustic album Black Metal as a soloist. The COVID-19 pandemic prevented any touring for this album, and Witchcraft did not perform live again until 2022, when Pelander recruited Ida Elin Tannerdal and Jussi Kalla of the indie rock band Little Stream for another three-piece line-up.
Idag was recorded with a different rhythm section, but Tannerdal and Kulla returned to play bass and drums onstage following the album's release.
Former members Ola Henriksson and Jens Henriksson are brothers, as are Mats Arnesén and Jonas Arnesén.
Not to be confused with another Witchcraft from Sweden.
