American Power Metal을 대표하는 밴드 중 하나인 Virgin Steele의 역사적인 데뷔 앨범. 유명 밴드의 데뷔 앨범에는 역사적인이라는 관용어구가 많이 붙긴 하지만, 그러나 모든 작품이 뛰어난 퀄리티를 지닌 것은 아니다. 데뷔 앨범 중에는 정말 아주 걸출한 앨범도 종종 있지만, 대부분의 작품은 자금 부족으로 프로덕션이 부실하다거나, 밴드 자체의 미숙한 기량으로 그저그런 작품으로 남는 경우가 많다. Guns N' Roses의 Appetite for Destruction 같은 작품은 상당히 드문 사례라고 할 수 있겠다. Virgin Steele는 국내 메탈 팬들에게도 비교적 잘 알려진 밴드인데, 이들의 데뷔 앨범도 위에서 언급한 대로 레코딩이나, 밴드의 아직 덜익은 역량이 담겨있는 작품으로 완성도 높은 앨범이라 할 수는 없다. Virgin Steele의 작품세계는 일명 Barbaric Romantic이라는 독특한 컨셉으로 이루어져 있는데, 그러한 경향은 이미 데뷔 앨범에도 드러나 있다. 클래시컬한 선율이나 신화, 판타지적인 세계관은 이미 밴드가 본격적으로 활동한 80년대 초기부터 드러나고 있다. 그러나 사운드의 부실함이나, 컨셉 앨범임에도 앨범의 전체적인 유기성이 약한 것은 이 앨범을 높이 평가하는데 장애가 되고 있다. 게다가 곡들의 수준도 그렇게까지 높다할 정도는 아니다. 앨범에 실린 곡들은 정말 그저그런지라 거의 기억에 남질 않는다. Virgin Steele의 열렬한 팬이 아니라면 밴드의 셀프 타이틀 앨범은 굳이 찾아 들을 필요는 없어 보인다.

Virgin Steele’s last album (Pt. 1) was a huge triumph and where they finally found their signature sound. It was also miles ahead of anything they’d done prior.
