Blasphmemous! Sinister! Merciless!
Death Metal 의 방향성을 제시한 Band Death 의 "Scream Bloody Gore"는 논외로 하고 Death Metal Band 들은 한가지 공통점이 있다. 바로 정규 첫 번째 음반이 매우 잘 만들어졌다는 것이다. Band 의 색깔은 최대한 배제하고 순수한 Death Metal 에 대한 탐닉으로 가장 Death Metal 다운 음반을 만든다는 것이다. Deicide, Malevolent Creation, Obituary, Suffocation 등의 첫 번째 정규 음반이 그러했고 Massacra, Morgoth 등의 첫 번째 정규 음반이 그러했다. 다시 말해 Old School Death Metal 로 가치가 있다는 것이다.
이것은 바로 Bolt Thrower 의 첫 번째 정규 음반인 본작이 Old School Death Metal 로써의 가치가 매우 높다는 것이다. Thrash Metal 의 잔재가 조금씩 묻어나지만 당시 Producing 기법으로 순수한 Death Metal 의 분위기를 연출한 노력이 많이 보이며 육중한 America Death Metal 과는 다른 Europe Death Metal 특유의 완급 조절과 Overdrive 가 눈에 띈다. 누군가 Bolt Thrower 의 음반을 추천한다면 나는 첫 번째 정규 음반인 본작을 추천할 것이다.

Once you get to Bolt Thrower’s 5th album “…For Victory”, there’s not much left to say. Bolt Thrower are one of those bands guilty of writing the same song and putting out the same album over and over. And the song happens to be really good.

Bolt Thrower has been putting out Death Metal since the very early days of the genre, and though the debut was a bit rough, all of their releases have had a very consistent level of quality without doing anything too dangerous. Insanely heavy, crunchy guitars and classic OSDM riffage is the name of their game and they win every time.
