Evergrey의 Torn은 2008년에 발표된 앨범으로, 밴드의 이전 대표작인 In Search of Truth나 The Inner Circle과 비교했을 때 다소 실망스러운 면이 있다. 이 두 앨범에서 보여준 깊고 어두운 분위기, 복합적인 감정선과 치밀한 서사 구조를 기대하고 Torn을 듣는다면 아쉬움을 피하기 어렵다. Torn은 어느 정도 음악적 변화를 시도했지만, 그 과정에서 밴드가 지닌 고유의 무게감과 긴장감이 약해진 느낌을 준다. 앨범 전반적으로 Torn은 보다 직설적이고 간결한 접근을 택하며, 이전 작품들보다 다소 가벼워진 사운드를 선보인다. 프로그레시브 메탈 특유의 복잡함과 드라마틱함이 줄어들었고, 멜로디 중심의 곡 구성으로 대중성을 노린 듯한 의도가 엿보인다. 물론 이러한 변화가 완전히 부정적인 것만은 아니지만, Evergrey만의 어두운 감성과 내면적 갈등을 기대한 팬들에게는 정체성의 혼란처럼 느껴질 수 있다. 또한, 보컬 Tom S. 전작 보다는 프로그레시브 터치를 더 집어넣고 아주아주 옅지만 그들만의 서정성도 한스푼 들어갔다. 하지만 오히려 직선적인 멜로디와 강약조절 등은 퇴보했다.
