A prog-metal album unintentionally revealed by an alt-metal band with only "two guitars".
[English in the end]
Farther than the Sun같은 경우도 원래의 얼터브릿지스럽게 귀에 잘 감기는 곡이다. Cry a River는 Addicted to Pain과 궤를 같이 하는줄 알았는데, 박자가 5/4박이다.
Alter Bridge had already proven their strength through their first and second albums with Mark Tremonti’s clean yet powerful guitar tone and Myles Kennedy’s comfortable but tightly stretched vocals. It was easy to assume that they were simply a “vocal swap” version of Creed—same instrumental core, different singer. But that logic only really applies to the relationship between Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave. Even if the members and the polished tones remain the same, I believe Alter Bridge walks a completely different path. I will probably touch on this again in my other Alter Bridge reviews, but for now, let’s move on to this album.
Alter Bridge had already shown slight progressive tendencies on their third album, and that record wasn’t bad at all. But once I heard track #2, Addicted to Pain, I was completely convinced: “This is the real deal.” (I’ll talk about the opening track in a moment, so give me a second.) After the sticky, tightly gripping riff, an unexpectedly straight and aggressive drum beat burst out—something I had never really heard from Alter Bridge before. If you’ve listened to heavy metal, this kind of beat is familiar and nothing new in itself. But hearing it in an Alter Bridge context made me grin instantly. It felt like they were saying, “We weren’t incapable of doing this kind of direct metal sound. We just hadn’t been doing it.” And I loved it so much I almost lost my mind. By the time they pushed straight into the solo section, it was already over for me. Back then, I didn’t even know the true purpose of diapers since I had no kids. Now, after changing plenty of my son’s and daughter’s diapers, I realize how dangerously unprepared I was not wearing one myself while listening to this track.
Then I excitedly moved on to Cry of Achilles. It opened with a sinister acoustic guitar riff. That alone made me excited in a different way. This was not the sound of a sorrowful ballad. As if to reinforce my confidence, a sizzling electric guitar joined the intro riff and the song began to unfold. In the middle bridge section, the bass builds tension, then the electric guitar shows the climax of that tension, and the final guitar solo runs headlong toward total destruction. Combined with lyrics that address Achilles—trapped by both divine manipulation and his own rage—from a third-person perspective offering encouragement and warning, the result is a masterpiece of beautiful chaos that feels both elegant and apocalyptic. If the first two tracks already feel much darker than anything they had done before, then yes, you’re right. This album is dark. And dark Alter Bridge is beautiful.
After the first two tracks, Bleed It Dry storms in with a groovy intro that defines the atmosphere of the entire song. The groove is strong enough to put groove metal to shame, yet it isn’t fun or bouncy. It is heavy, bleak, and beautiful. The guitar solo that appears in the dry, desolate mood truly feels like a scream echoing across a barren wasteland. After the solo, the song returns to its original crushing heaviness and drives relentlessly to the end.
Track #4, Lover, completely fooled me at first. Just by the title and the intro, I thought it was a ballad. Alter Bridge had always included pop-leaning hooks, slow-tempo songs, and acoustic intros, and their guitar solos were always smooth enough to justify that assumption. But that was a major miscalculation. This song simply begins quietly; it is actually a narrative piece. You might call it a ballad if you really want, but its theme is not about sharing love—it is a cry that says if you truly love someone, you must never ignore or deny their pain. It is far removed from any song that merely confesses affection.
The next two tracks push even harder in the direction set by Bleed It Dry. The Uninvited builds its groove with heavy use of sixteenth-note patterns. We always knew they were capable of this, but hearing them push such heavy and technical rhythms so relentlessly is still mind-blowing. Peace Is Broken follows the same path. It honestly feels like a metalcore or extreme metal band suddenly dropped a mid-tempo track into the album.
There are also moments where their earlier style from albums one and two reappears in a very welcome way. Calm the Fire carries a One Day Remains kind of atmosphere while still maintaining the desperation and darkness that dominate this album. Waters Rising brings Blackbird to mind, especially with its country-flavored, chewy chorus riff that sticks tightly in your ears. Farther Than the Sun is another song that feels very “Alter Bridge,” flowing naturally and comfortably. Cry a River initially seemed to follow the path of Addicted to Pain, but it turns out to be written in 5/4 time. These unpredictable elements are scattered throughout the album, and although subtle, they make even the most straightforward songs fit better into the overall concept. All Ends Well, written in 6/8, finally brings back the band’s signature brightness. Even in an album where darkness is the main appeal, this contrast is welcome. It is bright, yet still melancholic enough not to disrupt the flow.
And then… finally, the title track Fortress arrives. Whenever an album includes a song with the same name as the album, I expect it to be a finishing move. As expected, they bring a seven-minute epic. Within lyrics describing the collapse of the fortress a person has built in their own heart, and their resignation in the face of that collapse, the band experiments with musical ideas they had never tried before. I won’t explain them here. You should hear them for yourself.
This album speaks about the fortresses we build in our hearts. Human-made structures are destined to fall. Obsession and denial accelerate collapse, while acknowledgment is not defeat but maturity. Only when the fortress collapses can new choices be made. A castle built on flawed perspectives and defensive mechanisms cannot truly protect us. But when we build on honesty—admitting our weaknesses and mistakes—we finally move toward real growth.
Alter Bridge delivered this bitter yet truthful, painful yet ultimately hopeful message through dark, intricate, and beautiful sound. They didn’t bring in keyboards to “try prog.” They simply set a concept and message, committed to it with their own musical depth, and ended up creating a sound that many half-baked progressive rock or metal bands couldn’t even dream of touching. It’s almost ridiculous.
I’ve been listening to this album for a long time, but writing this review made me reflect on my own life. I thought it was just an album with insanely powerful sound. Turns out, the message is just as deep. This album is selfish.
And now I can’t help but think the next one will be even more insane.
I don’t believe in reincarnation, but if I were to be reborn, I’d want to come back as a member of Alter Bridge. ... See More
