Uriah Heep의 Sweet Freedom은 1973년 발표된 여섯 번째 스튜디오 앨범으로, 초기 헤비메탈의 육중함과 프로그레시브 록의 장대한 구성 사이에서 자신들의 음악적 영역을 확장해가던 밴드의 모습을 보여주는 작품이다. 당시 Uriah Heep은 이미 독특한 하드 록 사운드와 David Byron의 극적인 보컬, Ken Hensley의 오르간과 작곡, Mick Box의 기타를 중심으로 확고한 개성을 구축하고 있었지만, Sweet Freedom에서는 기존의 강렬한 이미지에만 머물지 않고 보다 다양한 분위기와 작곡 방식을 적극적으로 받아들인다. 특히 헤비한 기타와 오르간이 만들어내는 압도적인 사운드에 소울과 펑크의 리듬감, 서정적인 어쿠스틱 질감, 프로그레시브 록 특유의 긴 호흡을 결합하면서 음악적 스펙트럼을 넓혔다. 그렇다고 밴드의 본질적인 힘이 사라진 것은 아니다. 오히려 David Byron의 강렬하면서도 극적인 보컬과 Ken Hensley의 키보드, Mick Box의 기타, Lee Kerslake의 역동적인 드럼, Gary Thain의 유려한 베이스가 서로 맞물리며 Uriah Heep 특유의 장대한 음향을 유지한다. 프랑스 Château d’Hérouville에서 녹음된 이 앨범은 1973년 9월 발표되었으며, 미국에서는 빌보드 200 33위와 골드 인증을 기록했다. 따라서 Sweet Freedom은 단순히 전성기 Uriah Heep의 또 하나의 하드 록 앨범이라기보다, ... 찐득한 유기성에 찐득한 분위기를 자랑하는 작품으로 하드록을 사랑한다면 미워하기 힘든 음악입니다. 괴상하지는 않지만 뭐라 표현하기 힘들어서 그냥 백문이불여일청이라 평가합니다. 헤비메탈로의 연결점들을 착실히 찍고있던 당대 하드록 밴드들과는 다르게 더욱 부드럽고 섬세하게 가려는 모습이 엿보이는데, 취향을 떠나 이런 밴드도 있어야지 싶습니다.
