Miss May I의 Monument는 메탈코어 특유의 강렬함과 대중적인 멜로디를 적절하게 결합해 부담 없이 즐길 수 있는 앨범이다. 거칠게 몰아치는 기타 리프와 묵직한 브레이크다운, 폭발적인 드럼이 기본적인 골격을 이루지만, 이들은 극단적인 공격성만을 앞세우기보다 선명한 멜로디와 기억하기 쉬운 후렴구를 적절하게 배치하면서 듣는 재미를 놓치지 않는다. Levi Benton의 거친 보컬은 곡의 무게감을 충분히 살려주면서도 후렴구에서는 멜로디와 자연스럽게 어우러지고, 기타는 빠르게 질주하는 부분과 묵직하게 내려앉는 부분을 오가며 곡마다 적절한 긴장감을 만들어낸다. 특히 Monument의 장점은 메탈코어의 전형적인 문법을 사용하면서도 지나치게 복잡하거나 난폭한 방향으로 치닫지 않는다는 데 있다. 강한 기타와 브레이크다운이 이어지는 가운데서도 곡의 흐름이 비교적 명확하고 멜로디가 귀에 잘 들어오기 때문에 장르에 익숙하지 않은 청자도 어렵지 않게 접근할 수 있다. 그렇다고 음악이 지나치게 가볍게 느껴지는 것도 아니다. 묵직한 기타 톤과 거친 보컬이 중심을 잡고 있어 충분한 헤비니스가 유지되며, 젊은 밴드 특유의 에너지 역시 앨범 전체에서 생생하게 느껴진다. 물론 메탈코어라는 장르 자체의 익숙한 공식에서 크 ...
