Trail of Tears의 Profoundemonium은 고딕 메탈의 매력을 고스란히 담아낸 앨범이다. 이전 앨범들과 비교해도 이 앨범은 고딕적인 요소가 더욱 강조되며, 어두운 분위기와 감정적인 깊이가 중요한 역할을 한다. 이 앨범은 고딕 메탈의 전형적인 음산한 분위기와 서사적 요소들이 돋보이는 작품으로, 그동안의 심포닉적인 접근에서 한 걸음 물러서 좀 더 집중적이고 내성적인 음악을 선보인다. 앨범의 전반적인 분위기는 우울하고 음침하며, 불안한 감정선을 추구한다. 각 트랙은 차분하게 흘러가면서도 점차적으로 고조되는 긴장감을 느끼게 하며, 무겁고 그늘진 리프와 드럼이 곡을 지배한다. 키보드와 오케스트레이션은 다소 절제된 방식으로 사용되어, 과도한 웅장함보다는 곡의 내러티브 강화하는 역할을 한다. 이 점에서 Profoundemonium은 고딕 메탈의 특성상 풍부한 악기 배열보다는 섬세하게 짜인 음향적 텍스처에 중점을 두고 있다는 느낌을 준다. 보컬 역시 앨범의 핵심적인 부분을 차지한다.
