When progressive metal bands are considered, Dream Theater are a band who will undoubtedly be mentioned. This album remains one of their greatest, if not their greatest. It is a common debate among fans of the group which album is their best, and this album certainly is a contender, including classic tracks like Pull Me Under, Metropolis Pt. I, Under A Glass Moon, and the beautiful ballad Another Day. The guitar work by Petrucci and Myung here is simply otherworldly, as they so perfectly demonstrate through their cadential virtuosities. Perhaps, some might argue that the guitar becomes simply a noise after rather long guitar solos, and combined with Rudess’s keyboards some might even say that this album’s extended instrumental passages could be used for the soundtrack of Sonic The Hedgehog. Of course, there will be debate over Labrie's vocals, but in this mix they arguably sound quite good. This album remains to be as much of a technical masterpiece as it was upon its 1992 release. I'll end this review with a quote from a lyric from Metropolis Part I:

"Love is the dance of eternity."

Images and Words is kind of the first Progressive Metal album of the white collar, semi-symphonic ballad heavy variant. While Dream Theater’s debut was a pretty generic slice of first wave Prog Metal, here Dream Theater take a cue from the likes of Queensryche and Fates Warning, adding strong, anthemic choruses and near-Pop commercial sensibilities, though retaining the later band’s complex songwriting and musicianship. More interestingly, they borrow Savatage’s melodramatic balladry, and bring a strong ensemble of keys, strings, sax, and probably a bunch of other instruments to the mix.

New (and now long-time) Vocalist James LaBrie adds a signature charisma to the vocal delivery, with an impressive range and strong lyrical chops. Instrumentally, it’s not in the overtly technical territory of prog wankery, and rather the band does a great job of servicing the song as needed, and showing off when appropriate. There’s also a huge variety to the songs here, and they pull off just about everything they try their hand at. There’s epic songs, somber songs, sappy songs, serious songs… and tons of different styles, all wrapped in that signature Prog Metal package. The band is so instrumentally entertaining that they actually make a cheerfully cheesy wankfest in “Take the Time” that manages to be a total delight from start to finish.

There really isn’t a wasted minute here, and the penultimate track “Wait for Sleep” is proof of that. Normally, 2 minute no

Pull Me Under의 서정성과 묵직함, Another Day의 감미로운 감성, Take the Time, Metropolis의 갈고 닦은 테크닉, Surrounded의 화려한 설렘, Under A Glass Moon의 그 개성 넘치는 분위기(여름밤 귀가 중에 들으면 진짜 쫀득하더군요), Wai

Under A Glass Moon의 기타 솔로는 J.P.

개인적으로 Under a Glass Moon을 Pull Me Under만큼 좋아한다.
