With the turn of the 90’s, guitar-hero-lead Neoclassical Metal was one of the many Metal styles to see a sharp decline in both quantity and quality. Impellitteri’s sophomore album “Grin and Bear It” is unfortunately not an exception, but rather a testament to that fact.
Grin and Bear It manages to be the top Neoclassical Metal album of the year by this fact alone. While Impellitteri’s debut not only had very memorable guitar leads, it also was commanded by the legendary Graham Bonnet on vocals. New vocalist Rob Rock does a good job and even has a similar sound to Bonnet, but he can’t match the man when it comes to crafting earworm hooks and interesting lyricism. Impellitteri himself is still putting out impressive solos and riffs, but similarly, they just aren’t very memorable. There’s also a lot less “power” on this one compared to the debut, and it sounds more in line to hit some commercial success (though I’m sure it never did).
One plus is that the production is much better than the debut, which was a mess for no good reason. None of the songs are bad by any means either, it’s just nothing to write home about. The track “Power of Love” is an easy cut above the rest, with some classic Power Metal sensibilities to it.

4년만의 복귀작인 본작은 Vocal이었던 Graham Bonnet이 나가고 첫 앨범의 멤버였던 Rob Rock으로, Drum을 맡았던 Pat Torpey가 나가고 Ken Mary로 교체 되었다. 멤버만 바뀐게 문제는 아니지만 Impellitteri라는 밴드만의 그 사운드가 바뀌어 버리는 Impellitteri의 문제작으로 평가된다.
Heavy Metal과 Hard Rock 사운드로 채워진 본작은 Heavy함이나 날카로움이 덜하고 화려하게 수 놓았던 Chris Impellitteri의 Guitar 속주는 한발 물러나 있음에도 불구하고 곡들과 조화롭지 않게 섞이는 불협을 들려준다. Guitar로 인해 곡의 흐름이 매끄럽지 못하고 흐트러뜨리는 곡들이 대다수라 듣는 내내 조금 이질감과 불편함을 주었다.
Rob Rock의 Vocal 또한 Hard Rock 스타일의 곡에서는 뭔가 어울리지 못하는 목소리를 가진 듯하다. Heavy Metal 스타일의 곡에서는 그 자체만으로도 완벽하게 곡에 스며드는데 조금이라도 Bluesy스러우면 음색이 영 안 맞는 것 같았다.
스타일이 다르다고 전반적으로 곡이 별로라고 생각하고 싶진 않지만 곡 자체만의 문제가 아닌 Chris Impellitteri의 Guitar가 제일 거슬리는 점이 문제점이라 생각된다.

Chris Impellitteri가 누구인가? Yngwie Malmsteen과 함께 속주 기타리스트 가운데 수위를 다투는 기타 마이스터가 아니었던가. 그런 명인이 본작에서는 특기인 속주를 버리다시피 했다. Grin And Bear It을 Impellitteri 시원스러운 속주를 기대하고 듣는다면 낭패본다는 이야기다. 개인적으로도 속주를 기대하고 앨범을 샀는데 기대했던 내용물이 전혀 아니어서 당황했던 기억이 있다. 본작에서 Impellitteri가 보여주는 것은 Heavy Metal과 Hard Rock 사운드이다. 머리를 식히고 듣는다면 이 앨범의 장점은 충분히 보일 것이다. 적어도 Impellitteri와 Rob Rock이라는 대가가 참여한 앨범이다. 기대에서 벗어난 헤비메틀-하드록 사운드를 구사함에도 Impellitteri의 기타 연주는 그가 누리는 명성에 비해 조금도 아쉽지 않다. 속주를 하든 완주를 하든 무엇을 연주해도 그는 빛나는 연주자다. Rob Rock 역시 헤비메틀씬에서 굴지의 실력가인 만큼 본작에서 그 존재감을 충분히 과시하고 있다. 단지 Stand in Line이나 Screaming Symphony를 좋아하는 리스너에게는 이 앨범이 그다지 와닿지 않을 것이다. 그러나 Grin And Bear It은 결코 형편없는 작품이 아니다. 이 앨범 역시 전성기 Impellitteri의 작품 중 하나이다.
