Evergrey가 본격적으로 Progressive Metal 씬에서 입지를 다지기 시작한건 3번째 앨범인 In Search of Truth였다. 데뷔 초부터 뛰어난 연주력으로 싹을 보이던 이들의 재능은 In Search of Truth에서 발아하였고, 이윽고 후속작인 Recreation Day에서 만개하였으며, 마침내 다섯 번째 앨범인 The Inner Circle에서 풍성한 결실을 거두었다. The Inner Circle은 북유럽 프로그레시브 메탈씬에 지대한 영향력을 행사하여 현재까지도 Evergrey 최고의 역작으로 꼽힌다. 앨범 제작과정에서 리듬파트를 담당하던 Patrick Carlsson이 탈퇴하여 팬들의 우려를 사는 등의 우여곡절도 있었지만, 결과물은 오히려 기존작들을 뛰어넘는 수준이어서 역대 최고의 명반으로 불리게 되었다.
앨범의 주제는 Recreation Day와 대동소이한 방향이다. 반종교적인 주제를 밴드는 이번에도 강도높게 견지하는 자세를 보여주고 있다. 단지 이를 드러내는 형식은 약간 다르다. 전작이 신의 이름으로 타락을 자행하는 성직자들에 대한 이야기가 주를 이루었다면 종교를 광신한 한 인간의 파멸을 좀더 실감나게, 마치 과거의 아트록의 거장 Genesis처럼 희극적인 요소를 삽입하여 주제를 좀더 효율적으로 전달하여 감상의 재미를 크게 늘렸다. 개인적으로 전작인 Recreation Day이 본작에 필적하는 작품이라 ... See More

One of the most common misunderstanding and prejudice against metal is no doubtly 'Metal scene is full of blind animosity against religions'. Thinking about it, Swedish metal scene, which most parts are consisted with extreme metals i.e) black metal, death metal, is more likely to be misunderstood. However, here Evergrey stands, with by far the most impressive religious concept album in Swedish metal history, with utter counter-logic and profound understanding about the relationship between humankind and religion. (They do have some other issues like child abuse though)
Evergrey is a progressive metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden founded in 1995 with their debut 'The Dark Discovery'. Since then, through their discography, they have shown tendencies to have somewhat 'darker' and 'utter' lyrical images and overall atmosphere. If we look closer to this album, we can find out that the album is focused on religion, cults and child abuse. Tom Englund (Vocals & Guitars and a frontman of the band) said that the spoken parts of the 'Inner Circle' are of an actual person -- the last track 'When the Walls Go Down' samples excerpts from David Wilkerson's speech "A Call to Anguish".
Music-wise, there are the biggest contradicts about the musical quality of this album throughout the Evergrey's fandom ; some say the concept albums should be rated in accordance to their musical quality combined with the lyrical concept while some simply claim this album is not worth listening to except ... 명작 3연타. 지금의 에버그레이도 좋지만, 확실히 이 때 처연한 슬픔이 바닥에 깔린 특유의 느낌 만큼은 훨씬 짙은 냄새를 풍긴다.

에버그레이의 전성기를 결산하는 앨범으로, 악곡보다는 컨셉 지향성이 두드러지는 앨범입니다. 특유의 어두운 느낌이 전반에 깔려있고 관조적인 분위기를 풍기면서, 주제의식을 적나라하게 드러냅니다. 개인적으로 컨셉에 비해 악곡이 잘 부각되진 않는 것 같은 작품입니다. 1번 트랙 빼곤 흡입력이 부족한 것 같습니다. 명성에 비해 아쉬운 면이 있는 작품.
