To be honest, I got introduced to this band by that blind guardian cover of Don't Break the Circle, and I don't regret digging into it. First of all, we start with an intro track with synthesized sound effects that smoothly transitions into Don't Break the Circle, a great track. I really liked that melodic and fast riff in the middle of the song. The keyboard effects are also really important in this album, and they add a little bit of soul to it in songs like The Spell, and also its melodicness is pretty catchy in songs like Have We Been Here Before? I really really recommend this to Nwobhm enthusiasts and Hard Rock fans.

80년대에 접어들면, Judas Priest와 Motorhead, Def Leppard 등의 밴드들을 시작으로 완연한 헤비 메탈 밴드들이 우후죽순으로 태어나던 시기였다. Demon은 그다지 잘 알려져 있지는 않은 밴드지만, 헤비 메탈의 여명기부터 뚜렷한 메탈 사운드를 지향하고 있었다. 이러한 경향은 데뷔 앨범인 Night of the Demon에서부터 뚜렷이 드러났다. 이들의 데뷔 앨범에서 그러한 모습을 보였기 때문에 후속작도 당연히 헤비 메탈에 충실한 작품일 거라고 짐작하고 있었다. 당시 헤비 메탈 트렌드를 따른 밴드들은 다 그러했기 때문이다. Judas Priest든 Motorhead든, 아니면 Iron Maiden이든 다들 후속작에서는 헤비 메탈에 좀더 충실한 노선을 걸어갔다. 그런데, Demon은 그와 같은 틀에서 벗어나 있다. 두 번째 앨범에서 이들은 내 예상과는 다르게 Hard Rock적인 필을 상당히 섞어 메탈 사운드를 다소 묽게 했다. 헤비 메탈 밴드라고 할 수는 있겠지만, Demon은 다소 모호한 존재가 되버렸다. 이들은 남들이 모두 앞으로 나아가야할 때 웬지 뒤로 돌아가는 복고적인 스탠스를 취하고 있다. 하지만, 앨범 자체의 퀄리티 측면은 뭐라고 할 수 없을 정도로 괜찮은 수준이다. 하드 록 풍의 진득하면서 조밀한 솔로는 분명 상당히 매력적이다. 이 앨범에 수록된 Don't Break the Circle나 The Spell, Victim of Fortune은 의혹을 가졌던 나 같은 리스너의 입을 틀어막을 정도로 훌륭하다. 이들의 예기치 못한 변화는 당혹스럽게 생각되었지만 The Unexpected Guest는 즐기기에 충분한 앨범이다.
