Apocalypse는 80년대 NWOBHM을 좋아하는 사람이라면 몹시 반가울 법한 밴드이다. Apocalypse의 정규 데뷔 앨범 Abandon Hope는 고전 메탈 시대의 음악을 그대로 재현하고 있다. 사운드도 요즈음의 세련된 규격에 맞추기보다는 말그대로 구식 사운드의 방법론을 채택하고 있어 이 시절이 그리운 사람으로서 매우 만족스럽다. 밴드가 이런 방법론을 택한 것은 처음 활동을 했던 것이 30년 전이었던 탓도 있을 것이다. 밴드에 대한 정확한 정보는 없지만, 굳이 추측을 해본다면 멤버들의 개인 사정으로 음악 활동을 할 수 없게 되어서 한참동안 휴지기를 가진 후, 여유가 생긴 현시점에서야 이렇게 정규 앨범을 냈는지도 모른다. 그러다보니 이들의 시계침은 자신들이 밴드 활동을 하려고 했던 시점, 즉 80년대 초반 Judas Priest와 Motörhead가 Heavy Metal의 지평을 넓히고 있던 시기에 놓여져 있다. 본작이 한참 전에 수명이 끝나버린 NWOBHM을 지향하는 것도 어떻게 보면 당연한 노릇이다. 그 결과 Abandon Hope는 전반적으로 NWOBHM특유의 드라이브 강한 음악색을 띠고 있는데, 개인적으로 이들의 음악은 들으면 들을 수록 Grim Reaper가 생각난다. 공포스러운 존재의 이미지를 차용하고 있다는 점도 그러한 연상을 강화시킨다. 그래서 그런지 Apocalypse는 여러모로 호감가는 밴드이다. 현시대의 세련된 메탈 음악도 좋아하는 편이지만, 이렇게 과거를 그대로 재현하는 밴드도 나쁘지 않다. 이런 밴드가 헤비 메탈씬에 많이 나타났으면 한다.

I have seen the original single on Gate Records advertised for sale for anything from £100 to 300 euros so getting this EP re-issue is a bargain at $24-$25, but as it is a limited run expect it to start shooting up as soon as the stock runs out.
This is every bit as good as the original with the added bonus of three extra demo tracks on the B side.
