American Power Metal과는 뚜렷하게 구별되는 European Power Metal은 어디서 연원했을까? 그러한 주제를 찾기위해서 가장 좋은 방법은 역시 유러피언 파워 메탈의 개조로 여겨지는 밴드들의 초기 작품들을 듣는 것이 좋은 방법일 것이다. 개인적으로 Helloween과 Running Wild의 데뷔 앨범이 위의 질문에 가장 적절한 답을 하고 있다고 생각한다. 그들의 작품을 들어보면 현재 유럽과 남미, 그리고 아시아 일부지역에서 유행하고 있는 Melodic Power Metal의 시초는 Thrash Metal로 보는 것이 가장 합당할 듯하다. 이 결론이 다소 성급한 결론이 될지는 모르겠지만, 적어도 초기 파워 메탈이 스래쉬 메탈과 긴밀하게 관계하고 있다는 사실은 부인하지 못하리라 생각된다. 물론 이들의 작품이 Metallica의 초기 작품이나 Slayer처럼 스래쉬 메탈의 색깔을 아주 강하게 띠고 있는 것은 아니다. 굳이 분류를 하자면 멜로딕 스래쉬 메탈 정도로 정의할 수 있을 것이다. 미국 출신 밴드들과 동향의 Kreator나 Destruction, Sodom과는 달리 이들은 파괴적인 에너지보다는 좀더 접근하기 쉬운 멜로디가 기억에 남는 앨범을 만들어냈다. 복잡한 구성을 가지거나 화려하진 않지만 스래시적 리프, 멜로딕함, 정통 헤비메탏의 묵직함을 가진 재미있는 앨범이다. 유러피안 파워메탈이 어떻게 시작되었는지 알 수 있고 꽤나 흥겨워서 나쁘지 않게 들었다. 73점.

땀냄새, 가죽냄새, 금속 냄새 진동하는 독일산 무식 헤비메탈. 이런 단순한 파워를 가진 80년대의 메탈은 강력함을 넘어선 어떠한 풋풋함과 싱그러움을 지니고 있어, 즐거움을 줍니다. 복잡한 연주도 없고 구성도 간단합니다. 그냥 대다수가 무난하게 아 헤비메탈이란-하고 즐길만한 대중성마저 지니고 있습니다. 돋보이는 부분도 없지만 힘자랑은 충분히 합니다.

I personally love heavy metal-era of Running Wild with satanic imagery. They later go in the direction of pirate-themed power/heavy metal, but I also find myself revisiting this album along with Branded and Exiled, since these records have that rebellious sound. Even though Gates to Purgatory isn't perfect by any means, I still love it.

What would become one of the first Power Metal pirate bands started off as simple Speed/Heavy metal with rather generic occult lyrics. A solid debut to be sure, but it sounds very unpolished, and it’s clear the band hadn’t scratched the surface of their potential yet. Nothing here that really set them apart from contemporaries.

podarené debutové album, ktoré je oproti ich neskoršej tvorbe trošku odlišné, ale stále podarené a na dobu vydania aj dosť tvrdé a aj stále počúvateľné, štýlovo sa na tomto albume pohybujú pohybujú v "špinavom" heavy/speed metale
