Mastadon의 정규 8집 앨범이 나왔다. Crack The Skye부터 전작 Emperor of Sand까지 Mastadon 멤버와 관련된 가족 또는 지인이 앨범과 항상 연관이 되어왔는데 이번 앨범은 이들과 함께했던 매니저 故 Nick John을 기리는 작품이다. 그래서 그런지 고인의 영혼이 안식을 취하는 나무가 이번 앨범 이미지로 잡혀있다.
서두는 여기까지 하고 이제 앨범에 대해 이야기해보도록 하자. 사실, 러닝타임 때문에 걱정을 많이했다. 이들의 첫 2CD작품인 본작은 거의 한 시간 반에 가까운 러닝타임을 가지고 있다. 이 소식을 처음 접했을 때 걱정을 많이했다. 짧지만 임팩트를 요하는 요즘 트렌드와 맞지 않은 2CD라면 듣다가 중간에 이어폰을 내려놓을 수도 있을 것이라 생각했기 때문이다. 하지만 뚜껑을 열어보니 포장지는 맛있고 양도 많을 것처럼 보이지만 열어보면 질소만 한 가득 있는 우리나라 과자같진 않았다.
이번 앨범은 완급조절의 끝판왕이라 할 수 있다. 기본적으로 선공개곡들이었던 Teardrinker와 Pushing the Tides를 기준으로 전반엔 Blood Mountain, Crack The Skye, Emperor of Sand의 색채를 띄고(오프닝곡인 Pain with an Anchor를 필두로 5번트랙 The Beast까지는 이런 생각을 하게될 것이라고 확신한다) 후반부터는 짬뽕구간이라고 본다. 전반부는 이들의 색깔에 Modern Me ... See More

novinka "Hushed and Grim" sa prezentuje kvalitným zvukom a kombináciou Rock / Metal -u s občasnými prvkami Sludge a Alternative Prog.

Darkest record since Crack The Skye. Brann's voice sounds like almost possessed, hence driving me into their deep sorrow and temper. Melancholic tunes(probably done by Brent) are perfectly matched with groovy riffs(by Bill I guess), and both are wrapped with ingenious magic called drum and bass. A stunning top-notch work.

한시간 반이란 긴 앨범을 들어보면 충분히 러닝타임을 더 줄일 수도 있었을거란 생각이 드네요. 하지만 이들의 변화된 사운드에 오히려 이 긴 시간이 더 어울리기도 하네요. 그리고 보컬은 여전히 너무 좋습니다.

Great work from Mastodon. I like this double album from start to finish, highlighting songs like: Pain with an anchor, The Crux, Pushing the tides, Teardrinker, Eyes of serpents, Gigantium... Nothing is left over and there no filler on their longest album to date.
