Heavy Metal을 본격적으로 들은 것은 지금으로부터 15년전 쯤이다. 그러는 동안 주로 80년대 전성기에 나온 작품들을 중점적으로 들었었는데, 주로 청취대상이 영미권에만 편중되어 있었다. 제3국이라고 해봐야 독일의 그것도, Scorpions나 초기 Helloween의 Keeper 시리즈를 듣는 정도였다. 90년대 이후에는 유럽쪽 메탈 음악을 많이 들었었지만, 80년대 황금기를 연상할 때 나는 유럽권 밴드들은 거의 안중에도 두지 않았다. 10년이 넘도록 이렇게 편식을 하던 중 작년에, Kreator에 흥미를 가지게 된것을 계기로 80년대 독일 메탈에 본격적으로 관심을 두게 되었다. 그에 따라서 Sodom, Scanner, Destruction 등 이름은 들어봤지만, 그동안 별다른 관심을 기울이지 않았던 밴드들에게 흥미가 끌리기 시작했다. Axxis도 독일 메탈을 들어보자는 마음을 먹은 가운데 눈에 띄었던 밴드 중 하나다. 이들의 초기 작품들이 유명한 관계로 이들의 데뷔 앨범인 Kingdom of the Night부터 찾아듣게 되었다. 이들의 데뷔 앨범은 전형적인 Melodic Metal로서 쉽게 귀에 들어오는 음악을 주로 다루고 있다. 이 시기의 Scorpions와 약간 흡사한 듯 하지만서도 좀더 헤비 메탈 쪽에 가깝기도 하면서 멜로디를 부각시킨 이들의 스타일도 무척 맘에 든다. 본작에는 타이틀 트랙과 Never Say Never, ...
