... See More

[English in the end]
Made to Last의 경우도 비슷한 경쾌함이 있고, 상당히 만족스럽다.
Slow Me Down마저 적절한 마무리를 보여준다.
A genuinely impressive album that reworks the hip-hop-driven energy of the Nu Metal era through a more modern blend of Djent and Metalcore. What makes it especially interesting, though, is just how pop-oriented it is — and not in a rock-pop or alternative-metal kind of way, but through heavy incorporation of contemporary R&B and Hip-hop aesthetics. Hip-hop itself has long been intertwined with heavy music since the Nu Metal boom — arguably even earlier, going back to tracks like “Walk This Way” — but hearing R&B integrated this naturally into Metalcore still feels oddly refreshing.
The band’s vocal chemistry is one of the album’s defining strengths. It is not simply a clean-versus-unclean setup. Clean vocalist Tyler Carter approaches melodies with a distinctly R&B-inspired sensibility, while unclean vocalist Michael Bohn does far more than straightforward screaming. He frequently shifts into rough, rock-oriented clean singing as well, adding another texture to the mix. More importantly, both vocalists possess an excellent sense of groove. Since groove becomes essential in a style that blends Metalcore, Djent, Hip-hop, and R&B, this ends up being one of the album’s strongest characteristics.
“The Realist” works perfectly as an opener because it essentially summarizes the album’s entire identity. Crushingly heavy verses, instantly addictive hooks, and an instrumental midsection overflowing with groove all combine into something absurdly stylish. It was also the lead single with a music video, and honestly, it remains the standout track on the record.
“Home Soon” follows with a similar atmosphere, though its pop side leans even more heavily into modern R&B through sing-rapped vocal phrasing. “Young & Dumb” almost feels like pure R&B performed entirely with metal instrumentation. The following track, “Lost-N-Found,” successfully preserves the aggression and forward momentum that define metal at its core, and its opening section may honestly be one of the most exhilarating moments on the album. “Made to Last” carries a similarly upbeat energy and remains highly satisfying. By this point, it becomes impossible not to notice how consistently strong and well-crafted the riffs throughout the album really are.
Then, out of nowhere, “Flojo” begins with turntable scratching effects. Those recurring scratches that appear throughout the album evoke nostalgia for old-school Nu Metal bands like Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit, reinforcing the album’s underlying hip-hop identity.
“Hero” and “COMA” are perhaps the clearest examples of how bizarrely effective the album’s R&B fusion can be. Every time those sharp, Michael Jackson-style hiccup falsettos appear, they still sound amusingly unexpected even now. The guitar work occasionally carries subtle Neo Soul touches as well, which only makes the stylistic crossover more fascinating.
Tracks like “Rank Rider” and “Blue Wall” prevent the latter half of the album from losing momentum. Rather than slowing down, they feel like an extension of the musical flexing already established earlier in the record, preserving the album’s highlights all the way through. Even “Slow Me Down” provides an appropriately satisfying conclusion. The ending lands so well that the album genuinely feels best experienced front to back in a single sitting.
Again, this is an album where Djent, Nu Metal, Hip-hop, and R&B are blended together within the framework of modern Metalcore with remarkably little stylistic dissonance. Compared to the band’s debut album, it is far more immediate, memorable, and addictive on first listen. ... See More

Take a Look in the Mirror (2003) |
90/100 Mar 5, 2026 |

그러다가, Did my time에서 다시 보여주던 것을 마저 보여준다.
Let's Do This Now, I'm Done, Ya'll Want A Single(여기서는 장난기도 느껴지지만, 장난없이 때려준다), When Will This End에서도 여전히 서두부터 언급한 정말 자기 잘하는 것을 계속 하는데, 너무 편안~하게 들린다.
Before writing this review, I found myself liking the existing ratings given by other reviewers—many of which were close to the score I gave (around 90 points). The Korn sound that impressed me in their first and second albums had experimental and challenging elements right from the beginning. Before listening to this album, I had simply regarded those first two albums as classics without thinking much about it. But for the first time it occurred to me that the keywords “experimental” and “challenging” do not necessarily mean something that immediately sticks in the ear. This album, however, has a more instantly gripping quality than their early works. By saying it “sticks in the ear,” I am not suggesting that it becomes pop-oriented like their third album. Rather, the sound is clearer and more direct, without unnecessarily circling around its ideas.
As I have mentioned in several album reviews before, the most essential element of metal is "aggression". Whether it is nu metal or metalcore, the instruments and vocals need to hit hard—that is where the real appeal lies. Nu metal especially should strike with groove. Here, the clanking bass and drums lock into a groove, while vocalist Jonathan Davis wraps his nasal tone around the rhythm, sometimes drifting lightly and seductively, then suddenly unleashing heavy, almost insane screaming that strikes with brutal force.
Judged purely by the standard of how hard it hits, this album delivers a very satisfying result. It is not simply “heavy enough.” The impact comes in a well-prepared and organized manner. The album has a consistent texture and color throughout, yet it never feels like mere self-replication. That balance is quite intriguing. I found myself enthusiastically headbanging from the opening track “Right Now.” For a moment it feels as if the momentum of the first track simply continues forward, but “Deep Inside” introduces a more experimental sound that briefly offers something different. It is as if the band is saying, “We’re Korn—we’ve built our reputation. Did you really think we would just follow a predictable formula?”
Then “Did My Time” returns to the familiar approach once again. And really, what more is there to say? It simply grooves and hits hard. The middle section of “Did My Time,” where the instrumentation drops into a hollow, atmospheric session sound while Jonathan Davis cries out alone before the band re-enters, always provides a comfortable sense of satisfaction. In “Everything I’ve Known,” the band simply keeps doing what they do best—and it sounds fantastic. The only thought that comes to mind is, “Just keep doing what you’re good at.” At this point the album even works well as something you can listen to while studying or reading. The decision to feature Nas on “Play Me” was also quite effective. Jonathan Davis could probably have handled the rap himself, but instead he wisely chose to lay down those dreamy “Ah~” vocal textures while Nas took care of the rap section.
In the latter half of the album—“Let’s Do This Now,” “I’m Done,” “Y’all Want a Single” (which carries a playful tone but still hits hard), and “When Will This End”—the band continues doing exactly what they do best, just as mentioned earlier. And it all sounds extremely comfortable. You can almost feel that they are simply sitting back and doing what they excel at. Through this album, Korn feels like a model who has found the perfect outfit and wears it effortlessly, fully enjoying the stage they have created for themselves. That confidence reaches the listener as well.
In conclusion, by this point the band had already tried numerous experiments and produced their share of classic works. With that experience behind them, they now seem to have achieved a clear sense of self-awareness and simply present what they do best. Looking back after so many years, the first and second albums have become works of nostalgia, while this album remains one I revisit from time to time. It serves as a strong example that a band sounding “most like itself” does not necessarily mean the result will be predictable or dull. ... See More

Havok –
Time Is Up (2011) |
100/100 Mar 5, 2026 |

[With English Translation] Havok은 Thrash Revival Band가 맞다.
Havok is indeed a Thrash Revival band. In many ways they are exactly the kind of band people usually imagine when they think of that label. However, the sound they pursue is clearly well-defined. If the first album felt raw yet charming—delivering thr ash through a modern production—then the second album clearly presents the band the way they want to be heard. The appeal of this record is not simply its cleanliness. The power and speed remain intact, but now there is a sense of precision and refinement added to the attack.
(Track-by-track review):
Time is up!
1. This is exactly the kind of flavor an opening track should have. It runs forward with weight and clarity. The old-school thrash/hardcore-style gang-yells in the chorus are oddly charming. Interestingly, the solo section does not just hammer away heavily; instead, it preserves melody and atmosphere quite well. Throughout the album, the solo sections show good sense: rather than keeping the tempo at full sprint, the band slightly pulls back while maintaining speed so the solos can stand out more.
2. The well-constructed riff opens the track, and one wonders why they start with a strange time change. But the “showing off” ends there. After that, the song simply charges forward without unnecessary complexity. Still, it would have been nice if the subtle progressive tightness hinted at in the intro had been developed further. (Track 7 somewhat makes up for that.)
3. A lively intro riff carries through the verse as well. It is a straightforward, energetic song.
4. The intro begins with a solemn melody that draws you in, but suddenly a Slayer-style homage bursts out and the track ends in that atmosphere. If you listen to the song only with my description in mind, you will probably laugh at the sudden shift.
5. Another track that runs energetically and enthusiastically. One of the charms of the riffs on this album is their sense of breathing room. When a slightly relaxed riff is combined with subtle harmonies, a new kind of appeal emerges. Not everything has to be dense and complicated. This is essentially a riff-driven track from start to finish.
6. Oh—mid-tempo. Even Havok’s mid-tempo does not drag. The subtle harmonies heard in the previous track continue their charm here as well. The bass line is also quite attractive. The bridge leading into the solo is immersive, and the solo itself—especially the tremolo-bar work—becomes very memorable. Strangely, there are many moments in this track that stick in the mind.
7. The aggressive double-pedal drumming and tightly packed riffs are excellent. In the mid-section leading into the solo, that density becomes slightly progressive, hinting at technical thrash. The rapid shifts in atmosphere even bring Revocation to mind. Of course, Havok was never a band lacking in skill, but this track particularly demonstrates their technical ability. Pay attention to vocalist Sanchez in the chorus—he screams yet blends in a subtle singing tone. Few vocalists can grind their voice that harshly while still adding controlled vibrato.
8. Oh! Now this is truly mid-tempo. Even calmer than track 6, this one proves that Havok can write a proper groove-oriented song. The occasional bursts of speed are refreshing, but the groove really carries the track. It clearly feels like a continuation of track 6, yet without any awkwardness. It was surprising to realize that Havok can also create the kind of segmented rhythms that provoke intense headbanging. The twisted structure and the outro solo—while the groove is left largely to bass and drums—are particularly satisfying.
9. This track continues the groove-metal elements that appeared from track 6 through 8. It almost feels as if the band deliberately chose to explore that direction in the latter half of the album. And it works well. It is far better than those overly sentimental songs that drag the mood down in the name of emotional expression. If thrash bands want a breather, they should try something like this instead.
10. The title track of the album. Many of the strengths displayed in tracks 1 through 9 appear here in different forms. Every time the line “Time is up!” is shouted, the apocalyptic message becomes clear. It closes the album with authority and leaves a strong impression.
David Sanchez is one of the most compelling vocalists in thrash metal. Listening to him sometimes brings to mind Chuck Billy of Testament. At first glance, it seems odd to compare a massive, growling-voiced Native American frontman with this young Latino vocalist. Yet the similarity lies in their ability to combine harshness with actual singing. However, David Sanchez seems to possess a wider vocal range and greater expressive variety. Chuck Billy’s sheer heaviness—matched perhaps only by Philip Anselmo in terms of macho presence—is undeniable, but his expressive palette can sometimes feel somewhat straightforward. In that sense, David Sanchez’s voice is more fun to listen to. The vocal potential that already appeared on the debut album seems to shine even brighter here. ... See More

Jelusick –
Follow the Blind Man (2023) |
90/100 Feb 9, 2026 |

(English in the end)
The Great Divide
... See More
