크럭스를 처음알게 되었던게 어떤 계기였을까, 이 망할놈의 요즘 기억상실증은 적어놓지 않으면 도무지 정확히 기억해내는것이 없다. 아무튼 메탈킹덤과 이태원 우드스탁을 토대로 2012년후반기에 얻어진 인연은 현재까지도 형님들 하면서 잘 이어지고 있다.
2012년 당시에 크럭스 멤버들은 각자 직업도 있고 종종 모여 밴드 활동을 하면서도 아직 정규 앨범에 대하여 정확한 논의는 이루어지지 않고 있었던것 같은데 그 이듬해 정규앨범 작업을 들어갔다는 반가운 소식을 접했다. zero Gravity, Time Travel, Sell-Soul-Sold , Itch for the Cure등의 곡은 라이브 연주에서 종종 접하긴 했지만 드디어 그들의 앨범이 나온다고 하기에 우선은 정말 대단한 열정에 박수를 보내지 않을수 없었다.
이렇게 무조건적인 우호세력의 입장인 나로선 객관적인 앨범에 대한 평가를 내리기는 사실은 힘들다. 처음 라이브에서 느꼈던 풋풋한 한국 헤비메탈의 기억으론 이들의 사운드는 황홀하기만 했기 때문이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 최대한 객관적으로 평가를 내리더라도 이 앨범의 전체적인 사운드는 정말 여타 메이저급 헤비메탈 앨범과 견주어도 뒤쳐짐이 전혀없다. 깔끔하고 웅장하며 너무 과하지도 연약하지도 않게 마스터링이 잘 되었다. 앨범 작업의 흐름을 페이스북을 통해서 간간히 접하였지만 그 포스팅에서 느꼈던 멤버들의 답답함과 초조함은 꼼꼼함과 섬세한 노력의 결과임을 입증해주었다.
각 곡들은 어떨까? 멤버들이 소개한것처럼 이 음반은 요즘 한국에서 대세를 이루는 일반적인 익스트림 메탈과는 조금 다르다. 간단히 표현하자면 어디 한곳에 치우치지 않고 그저 헤비메탈 자체의 강렬한 사운드를 유지하며 자신들의 노래를 만들어냈다고 생각한다. 전체적인 분위기는 헤비하고 프로그래시브하다. 시종일관 진행되는 기타리프와 강렬한 베이스, 여유있는 더블 드러밍이 이 앨범의 가장 큰 특징이다. 그들이 가장 자주 연주하고 좋아하는 것으로 추정(?)되는 파워메탈식의 Zero Gravity, Time Travel도 멋지지만 역시 내가 가장 마음에 들었던 부분은 이 음반의 프로그래시브한 분위기이며 세바스찬의 화려한 고음 보컬도 멋지지만 느린템포의 곡사이에서 분위기를 멋드러지게 표현해내는 중저음의 카리스마 또한 무척이나 매력적이었다. 기타리스트 형님의 연주실력도 라이브에서 느꼈지만 정규앨범에서 그가 만들어낸 멜로디메이킹이나 솔로 파트 자작능력또한 상당히 존경스럽고 멋지다.
우리 메탈도 이렇게 화려하고 멋진 헤비메탈이 될수 있음을 보여준 크럭스, 앞으로도 천천히 건강하게 좋은 활동을 보여주고 종종 신곡도 소개하며 꾸준히 활동해줘서 2집이 나오길 기대해본다.

How did I first get to know CRUX? This goddamn short term memory loss seems to be getting worse every day. I can’t seem to remember anything properly unless I jot it down somewhere. What is certain though, is that my relationship with CRUX is as strong as, if not stronger than when I first got to know them through Metal Kingdom and Woodstock Itaewon back in 2012.

I don’t remember them discussing about recording their CD back then, but I do remember being stoked a year later when they said they would be releasing a full length album the following year. ZERO GRAVITY, TIME TRAVEL, SELL-SOUL-SOLD, ITCH FOR THE CURE were all tracks that I had the chance to hear live on various occasions. So by the time I learned that they will finally release an album, I could not help but applaud how passionate they were about music. Granted, having been mesmerized by their live sound and thus having become a part of the unconditional ‘friendly forces’ a long time ago, it isn’t easy for me to maintain an objective view on their release. Regardless, even if I firmly take on an objective stance, I can confidently say that “Elapse with the Relapse” is a very strong effort even when compared to major global metal albums.

The mastering is very well balanced, delivering a crisp sublimity; powerful, yet not overly done. I kept track of their recording progress by following their posts on facebook etc., and with the end result in my hands, I can now interpret their past frustrations as a result of their elaborate and detailed approach required in producing their art.

What about each individual track? As introduced within the liner notes, their music does not follow the ‘extreme metal’ direction which seems to be a general tendency in the current Korean metal scene. Simply put, CRUX does not put emphasis on a particular subgenre. They just went ahead and created music unique to CRUX while maintaining the heaviness of metal.

The overall ambience of the album is both heavy and progressive. Resounding throughout the record are relentless guitar riffs, powerful bass-lines, and double bass drumming that almost sounds as if delivered effortlessly. Although some of the more power-metal influenced tracks that they play frequently - such as ZERO GRAVITY and TIME TRAVEL - are awesome in their own right, what really got me into the album is the overall progressive nature of the compositions. Sebastian’s meticulously executed high pitched vocals are brilliant, but I also find the expressions in his mid/lower register just as appealing and charismatic. Eric has always showcased excellent mastery of the six-stringed instrument at their live shows, but his melody-making and original solos on the album are equally admirable.

CRUX has shown how Korean metal can be a fabulous and articulate form of art. I hope they will continue to play, write, and introduce new songs, slowly but surely accumulating into what will become their follow-up album that I am already looking forward to.
