[With English Translation] Havok은 Thrash Revival Band가 맞다. 우리가 주로 생각하는 전형적인 그런 밴드가 맞긴하다. 그런데, 자신들이 추구하는 사운드는 분명 확실히 잘 갖추었다. 1집때의 날것이지만 이 시대의 사운드로 풀어낸 매력이 있는 정도였다면, 2집은 확실히 자신들이 보여주고 싶은 모습을 보여줬다. 본작이 보여주는 매력은, 단순한 정갈함은 아니다. 파워와 스피드는 여전하며 정교한 맛이 생겼다는 것이다.

Havok is indeed a Thrash Revival band. In many ways they are exactly the kind of band people usually imagine when they think of that label. However, the sound they pursue is clearly well-defined. If the first album felt raw yet charming—delivering thrash through a modern production—then the second album clearly presents the band the way they want to be heard. The appeal of this record is not simply its cleanliness. The power and speed remain intact, but now there is a sense of precision and refinement added to the attack.

트랙별 리뷰(Track-by-track review):
1. 오프닝 트랙이 이런 맛이 있어야지. 묵직하고 시원시원하게 달려준다. 후렴구에서 올드스쿨 쓰래쉬/하드코어적인 Gang-yell이 들려오는건 뭔가 귀여운 맛이 있었다. 솔로부분이 생각보다 묵직하게 때려박기보다는, 멜로디나 느낌이 잘 살아있다. 이 앨범의 솔로 섹션들은 전체적으로 계속 완전 달리기 보다, 스피드는 유지하되 솔로가 더 돋보이도록 빠져주는 센스가 잘 살아있다.
2. 잘 짜인 리프에, 왠 놈의 변박을 시작부터 하나 했는데, 있는 척은 거기까지다. 이후는 복잡할거 없게 달린다. 인트로에서 보여줬던 은근한 프록스러운 촘촘함이 조금 더 살았으면 좋았을텐데 하는 아쉬움이 있다. (7번 트랙이 이 아쉬움을 달래준다)
3. 발랄한 인트로 리프가 절까지 이어진다. 스트레이트한 곡이다.
4. 인트로부터가 비장한 멜로디에 취해 노래를 듣고 있었는데, 갑자기 Slayer의 오마주가 튀어나오고 그 분위기로 마무리 된다. 내 말만 보고 이 곡을 들어보면 헛웃음만 나올것이다.
5. 또 신나고 가열차게 달려주는 트랙이다. 본 작 리프의 매력은 여유있음이다. 약간 여유있게 진행되는 리프에 은은하게 화음을 붙여주니 새로운 매력이 느껴진다. 꼭 복잡하고 촘촘한게 전부는 아니다. 리프다 거의 다 한 곡!
6. 오... 미드템포다. Havok의 미드 템포여봤자 쳐지지 않는다. 전 곡에서 보여준 은은한 화음이 여기서도 그 매력을 이어간다. 베이스도 상당히 매력진 곡이다. 솔로로 넘어가는 브릿지 부분의 몰입도도 일품인데, 이 곡의 솔로는 또 트레몰로바의 아밍이 다 했는데, 두고두고 기억에 남는다. 희안하게 기억에 남는게 많다.
7. 가열찬 더블페달과 함께 촘촘하게 때리박는 리프가 일품이다. 이 촘촘함이 중반부 솔로넘어가는 섹션에서는 살짝 프록스러운게 테크니컬 쓰래쉬같은 면모도 슬쩍 보인다. 분위기를 확확 전환하는 부분에서는 Revocation이 떠오르기도 하였다. 하긴, Havok이 실력이 모자른 밴드는 아니었긴 했지만, 이 곡에서 좀 더 자신들이 실력이 있다는 것을 보여준거 같다. 보컬 Sanche의 지르면서도 싱잉이 살살 들어간 후렴구가 멋드러졌으니 참고해보시라. 갈아마시면서도 살살 바이브레션을 넣을수 있는 보컬이 얼마나 있을까.
8. 오! 이건 정말 미드템포다! 6번트랙 보다 더욱 차분한 감이 드는 미드템포 곡이다. 그루비한 곡도 잘 만드는구나 싶었다. 정말 제대로 된 미드템포 곡이다. 중간중간 달려주는 부분도 시원하니 좋았지만, 이 곡은 그루브가 다 한 느낌이다. 6번의 연장선이 맞다! 어정쩡함은 1도 없다. Havok도 이렇게 쪼개는걸로 신명난 헤드뱅잉을 유발할 줄 아는 밴드였다는 것을 또 처음 느꼈다. 기묘하게 꼬아놓고 그루브는 베이스와 드럼에게 떠맡긴 아웃트로 솔로까지 맘에 들었다.
9. 6번에서 8번으로 넘어간 그루브 메탈적인 요소를 그대로 이어나가는 트랙이다. 후반부는 이런 매력을 보이기로 결심했나 싶다. 그리고, 맘에 든다. 무슨 감정선 잡는답시고 축축 처지는 곡들 보다 훨씬 백배는 낫다. 쓰래쉬 밴드는 쉬어가려면 이런거나 좀 해라.
10. 앨범과 동명타이틀의 곡. 1~9번의 트랙에서 보인 매력들이 여기저기서 모두 나뉘어서 보인다. Time is up!이라고 외칠때마다 느껴지는 묵시록적인 메세지는, 앨범의 대미를 장식하기에 부족함 없다 느끼며 청음을 잘 마쳤다.

1. This is exactly the kind of flavor an opening track should have. It runs forward with weight and clarity. The old-school thrash/hardcore-style gang-yells in the chorus are oddly charming. Interestingly, the solo section does not just hammer away heavily; instead, it preserves melody and atmosphere quite well. Throughout the album, the solo sections show good sense: rather than keeping the tempo at full sprint, the band slightly pulls back while maintaining speed so the solos can stand out more.
2. The well-constructed riff opens the track, and one wonders why they start with a strange time change. But the “showing off” ends there. After that, the song simply charges forward without unnecessary complexity. Still, it would have been nice if the subtle progressive tightness hinted at in the intro had been developed further. (Track 7 somewhat makes up for that.)
3. A lively intro riff carries through the verse as well. It is a straightforward, energetic song.
4. The intro begins with a solemn melody that draws you in, but suddenly a Slayer-style homage bursts out and the track ends in that atmosphere. If you listen to the song only with my description in mind, you will probably laugh at the sudden shift.
5. Another track that runs energetically and enthusiastically. One of the charms of the riffs on this album is their sense of breathing room. When a slightly relaxed riff is combined with subtle harmonies, a new kind of appeal emerges. Not everything has to be dense and complicated. This is essentially a riff-driven track from start to finish.
6. Oh—mid-tempo. Even Havok’s mid-tempo does not drag. The subtle harmonies heard in the previous track continue their charm here as well. The bass line is also quite attractive. The bridge leading into the solo is immersive, and the solo itself—especially the tremolo-bar work—becomes very memorable. Strangely, there are many moments in this track that stick in the mind.
7. The aggressive double-pedal drumming and tightly packed riffs are excellent. In the mid-section leading into the solo, that density becomes slightly progressive, hinting at technical thrash. The rapid shifts in atmosphere even bring Revocation to mind. Of course, Havok was never a band lacking in skill, but this track particularly demonstrates their technical ability. Pay attention to vocalist Sanchez in the chorus—he screams yet blends in a subtle singing tone. Few vocalists can grind their voice that harshly while still adding controlled vibrato.
8. Oh! Now this is truly mid-tempo. Even calmer than track 6, this one proves that Havok can write a proper groove-oriented song. The occasional bursts of speed are refreshing, but the groove really carries the track. It clearly feels like a continuation of track 6, yet without any awkwardness. It was surprising to realize that Havok can also create the kind of segmented rhythms that provoke intense headbanging. The twisted structure and the outro solo—while the groove is left largely to bass and drums—are particularly satisfying.
9. This track continues the groove-metal elements that appeared from track 6 through 8. It almost feels as if the band deliberately chose to explore that direction in the latter half of the album. And it works well. It is far better than those overly sentimental songs that drag the mood down in the name of emotional expression. If thrash bands want a breather, they should try something like this instead.
10. The title track of the album. Many of the strengths displayed in tracks 1 through 9 appear here in different forms. Every time the line “Time is up!” is shouted, the apocalyptic message becomes clear. It closes the album with authority and leaves a strong impression.

*보컬에 대한 고찰(Thoughts on the vocals): David Sanchez는 쓰래쉬 보컬 중 가장 매력적인래쉬 보컬 중 가장 매력적인 한 사람이 떠오르게 한다. Testament의 Chuck Billy이다. 육중한 그로울링 중심 톤의 왕덩치 인디언 아저씨와 이 젊은 라띠노 친구가 비슷한 구석이 무엇일까? 거칠지만 싱잉이 가능한 보이스라는 점이다. 그런데, David Sanchez의 음역이 더 넓고 표현가능한 폭이 좀 더 넓다 느껴진다. Chuck Billy의 육중함은 마초적인 미에 있어서는 필립안젤모 이외에 견줄만한 보컬을 본 적이 없지만, 표현의 폭에서는 조금 단순하다는 느낌이 들때가 있다. 그런 점에서 David Sanchez의 보컬은 듣기 재미있는 보컬이다. 1집부터 살살 두각을 드러냈던 보컬이 더 빛을 발한거 같다.
David Sanchez is one of the most compelling vocalists in thrash metal. Listening to him sometimes brings to mind Chuck Billy of Testament. At first glance, it seems odd to compare a massive, growling-voiced Native American frontman with this young Latino vocalist. Yet the similarity lies in their ability to combine harshness with actual singing. However, David Sanchez seems to possess a wider vocal range and greater expressive variety. Chuck Billy’s sheer heaviness—matched perhaps only by Philip Anselmo in terms of macho presence—is undeniable, but his expressive palette can sometimes feel somewhat straightforward. In that sense, David Sanchez’s voice is more fun to listen to. The vocal potential that already appeared on the debut album seems to shine even brighter here.
