To experience Converge is to understand that comfort has never been part of their vocabulary. For thirty-five years, they've occupied that space just beneath the skin-irritating, persistent, impossible to ignore. Their latest offering, Love Is Not Enough, arrives not as a calculated release but as an inevitability, light seeping through cracks you'd long since plastered over. Against all reasonable expectation, it stands as a monument to surgical precision wrapped in chaos.
Where previous work sprawled across atmospheric landscapes, this album cauterizes. It moves with lean aggression, each track a calculated wound. Producer Kurt Ballou has crafted something that breathes fire and ice simultaneously the low end will shake fillings loose while the highs cut like glass.
The opening salvos hit with deceptive weight. "Bad Faith" doesn't so much begin as detonate, its opening riff lurching rather than flowing, angular and venomous. "Distract and Divide" follows suit, a four-minute exercise in controlled spite. Drummer Ben Koller deserves special mention—his performance throughout sounds less like playing and more like forcing entry, each strike a boot against reinforced steel.
"Beyond Repair" arrives unannounced, an instrumental piece that functions as the album's held breath. It's the sound of adrenaline wearing off, of assessing damage in suddenly quiet rooms. What follows isn't weakness—it's weight. "Amon Amok" drags itself through thick, sludge-laden air. "Gilded Cage" mourns rather than attacks. These aren't songs in the traditional sense; they're elegies for unnamed losses.
Jacob Bannon has spent decades refining his craft, and here he transcends. His vocals don't perform so much as purge—each utterance expelled from somewhere visceral. The closing track, reportedly written in a funeral home parking lot, carries that specific cold. "We Were Never The Same" denies catharsis entirely. It resigns. It admits what the title suggests: that love, however beautiful a mechanism, cannot carry the full weight of human brokenness.
Purists may mourn the unfiltered chaos of earlier work. They miss the point entirely. Love Is Not Enough isn't concerned with chaos—it examines what remains after chaos subsides. It's the morning after, the quiet tremor, the understanding that anger doesn't disappear with age. It calcifies. It deepens. It learns patience, then strikes precisely when vulnerability peaks.
Essential listening for anyone who believes hardcore can still evolve.

Read More

Unforgivable vocals ruin this. Look, I love extreme vocals. I love death growls, I like Black Metal shrieks, I love Thrash yells, all that good jaunt. And even classically “bad” vocals don’t bother me much. I’ve got a pretty high tolerance for that stuff as someone who listens to more than a handful of Metal bands where one of the musicians basically bit the bullet and ... Read More

Read More
