Virgin Steele의 세 번째 정규 앨범 Noble Savage는 밴드의 결정적 전환점을 알리는 작품이 아닌가 싶다. 전작들에서 다소 전형적인 미국식 헤비 메탈 밴드로 인식되었던 Virgin Steele는 이 앨범을 기점으로 자신들만의 색깔, 특히 향후 명확해질 극적인 미학의 서막을 열기 시작했다. 앨범 전체를 관통하는 분위기는 더 이상 단순한 리프 중심의 메탈에 머물지 않는다. 무엇보다도 Noble Savage는 서사적 감정의 싹을 틔운 앨범이라는 점에서 의미심장하다. 곡들은 단지 반복적인 구조를 넘어서, 기승전결과 감정의 고조를 의식한 전개를 갖는다. 키보드의 활용도 그전보다 눈에 띄게 증가했고, 멜로디와 리프, 리듬이 단순히 헤비함을 뽐내기보다는 곡 속 이야기와 감정을 드러내는 도구로 쓰이기 시작했다. 물론 완성도 면에서는 아직 거칠고 날것인 면이 많다. 사운드 프로덕션도 다소 투박하며, 진정한 서사적 구성력이 빛을 발하기엔 미숙한 부분도 있다. 그러나 이 앨범이 중요한 이유는, 이후 Virgin Steele이 지향할 에픽 메탈의 세계관이 이 시점에서 처음으로 형태를 갖추기 시작했다는 점이다. There are great moments here, and a lot of potential. But most of the album is simply not that great, not fully developed.
