핀란드는 고딕 메탈, 멜로딕 데스, 심포닉 메탈의 명가로 잘 알려져 있지만, 파워 메탈 장르에서도 결코 뒤지지 않는다. 핀란드 태생의 밴드 Thunderstone은 정통 유럽식 파워 메탈의 본보기라 할 만한 팀이 아닌가 싶다. 2002년 셀프 타이틀 데뷔 앨범으로 인상적인 출발을 한 이들은, 2년 뒤인 2004년에 발표한 두 번째 앨범 The Burning을 통해 단순한 신인에서 완성된 밴드로 한층 성장했음을 증명했다. The Burning은 당시 유럽 파워 메탈 씬에서 크게 유행하던 요소들 즉, 속주 중심의 기타, 키보드와의 멜로디 주고받기, 드라마틱한 전개, 파워풀한 보컬을 충실히 따르면서도, Thunderstone만의 보다 헤비하고 단단한 리프 중심의 접근이 돋보인다. 묵직한 리프 메이킹에 충실하다는 점에서 이 밴드가 단순히 파워 메탈 밴드들에게서 영향을 받았을 뿐만 아니라, 고전 헤비 메탈 밴드들의 유산도 소화한 밴드임을 알 수 있다. 만약 Sonata Arctica나 Stratovarius 같은 전통적인 멜로딕 파워 메탈을 좋아하면서도, 좀 더 남성적이고 헤비한 접근의 음악을 찾는다면, The Burning은 그 갈증을 완벽하게 해소시켜 줄 것이다.
