My most played album #2 My second most played! Wounded Land from the band Threshold! An amazing concept album about saving the planet from 1993. I was in Yellowstone driving around the top of the volcano listening to this and tears came to my eyes, They were singing about mankind destroying the earth while I was looking at such amazing beauty, it really moved me! I was so happy my wife did not notice. With duel leads the guitar tone is amazing, Great vocals from Damian Wilson and the lyrics are the best! Sounds a lot like Dream Theater. With 42 plays my 2nd most most played CD in my collection. I was at the record store in 2003, the cover looked cool, I had never heard of the band, it was in the $1 bargain bin, I took it over to the listening booth, I could not believe what I heard. It felt like I won the lottery that day. Rating albums from 1-10 I gave this album a 9.979 making it the 21st best album ever made!

영국 출신의 Progressive Metal 밴드 Threshold의 데뷔 앨범. 오늘날의 메탈 팬들은 프로그레시브 메탈하면 대번에 Dream Theater를 떠올릴 것이다. 그만큼 Dream Theater의 영향력은 프로그레시브 메탈씬 전체에 작용하고 있다. 그러다보니 많은 밴드들 사이에 Dream Theater의 작법이나 연주 방식을 따르는 경향이 아주 만연해 있다. 그러나 90년대 초반에는 오히려 양식미에 있어서는 지금보다 자유롭지 않았나 싶다. Threshold의 Wounded Land만 해도 그렇다. 93년에 발표된 작품으로 Dream Theater의 프로그레시브 메탈 결정판 Images and Words가 나온지 1년 후에 발표된 작품이다. 즉 Dream Theater식 프로그레시브 메탈이 가시화되기 전에 나온 앨범이니만큼 상대적으로 자유로운 작품이라는 소리다.
Threshold의 데뷔 앨범은 Dream Theater류의 치밀하게 계산된 연주보다는 전체적인 구성력에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 테크니컬한 연주력을 과시하기보다는 밴드는 일정한 흐름과 컨셉을 중시하는 모습을 보이고 있다. 이러한 면모는 90년대 후반부터 급격하게 증가하기 시작한 프로그레시브 메탈 밴드들과 대조된다. 이들은 Dream Theater보다는 Savatage나 전성기 시절의 Queensrÿche, 90년대 초반의 W.A.S.P.와 흡사하다. 앨범은 컨셉 앨범답게 유기적인 흐름을 중시하는데 주로 다루고 ... See More

Competent and solid, quite great for a debut, though it's lacking that special something to separate it from any other acts in the genre.

프로그래시브 메탈... 드림씨어터 스타일의 그런 사운드는 아니다. 아름다움을 지향한 프로그래시브 락에 좀더 가깝지만 그래도 헤비한 사운드를 보유한 정도? 비교대상이 프로그래시브 메탈은 아니란뜻. 아무튼 이들 특유의 아름다운 스타일, 스토리를 전개하는듯한 구성은 매력적이다.

그 때 그 시절 전영혁의 음악세계에서 새너티스 엔드가 흘러나올 때는 드림씨어터의 풀미언더하고는 뭔가 다른 점이 있다는 막연한 느낌만 들었었는데 지금 다시 들어보니 이들만의 독특한 프로그레스브함은 또다른 매력이 느껴진다
