슬립낫(Slipknot)이 기지개를 편다. 정규 5집 이후 앨범 수록곡만 싱글컷할 뿐 장장 4년 간 소식이 없던 그들이 다시 움직이기 시작했다. 그리고 출발이 좋다. 세션부터 보컬까지 독이 바짝 올라있다. 아직 다음 앨범 수록곡인지 일회성 싱글인지도 정확히 알려지지 않았지만, 일단 슬립낫이 이렇게 건재한 모습으로 돌아왔다는 사실 자체가 반갑다.
일단 곡에 대한 설명을 하기 전에 분명히 해야할 점이 있다. 그들은 보컬 코리 테일러(Corey Taylor)가 멀쩡한 목으로 가장 과격한 사운드를 소화하던 1, 2집 시절부터, 굉장히 흥겨운 사운드를 구사하던 대중적인 밴드라는 사실이다. 고어틱한 분장은 제쳐놓고 음악만 들어보자. 신나는 기타리프에 청량한 퍼커션과 질주하는 드럼까지. 북미식 ‘파티 메탈’이 있다면 아마 이것이 아닐까 싶을 정도다. 그나마 5집에서 약물 중독으로 사망한 前 베이시스트 폴 그레이(Paul Grey) 추모하느라 분위기가 가라앉았을 뿐이다.

그루브 메탈 영향력이 좀 느껴지는 얼터 메탈이며 내가 그루브 메탈 요소를 별로 안좋아하지만 이정도면 꽤 나쁘지 않다고 생각한다. 다만 긴 인트로와 3분 때에 시작하는 쉬는 시간 같은 건 빼버리고 타이트하게 냈으면 더 좋았을 것 같다.

건재함을 보여준 신곡이다. 그루브하면서도 박력있고, 군데군데 섞여있는 퍼커션 파트 등 충분히 즐길만한 요지가 많은 신곡으로, 여러모로 그래도 이들만의 스타일을 잘 보여주고 있는 슬립낫이 참 대단하면서도 멋지다. 내한 한번 와줬으면 좋겠다..

오랫동안 슬립낫에 대해 관심을 끊고 살다가 친구가 추천해서 들어봤다. 아주 옳다. 들으면서 1,2집이 연상되는 와일드함이 살아있는 음악이었다. 아직은 발톱이 날서있다는 걸 증명한 곡.

새 싱글을 통해 유추할 수 있는 신보의 방향성은 '과거의 회귀' 정도. 과거 3장에서 보여준 '메탈하는 Stone Sour' 의 모습과는 다르게, Iowa 앨범을 떠올릴 정도로 헤비해진 싱글을 들고 왔다. 거의 6분에 가까운 곡임에도 불구하고 피로감이 느껴지지 않는다. 곡 구성에도 상당히 공을 들인 느낌이다. 하지만 한창 시절에 곡들과 비교하기에는 10% 정도 모자란 느낌이다.

사운드는 이전 앨범에 비해 더 과격해지거나 더 헤비하지 않고 비슷하다. 눈에 띄는건 코리의 보컬이 이전보다 거칠어지고 묵직해져(초기앨범보다는 못하지만..) 초기의 모습이 약간 보인다는건데 이점이 신보가 기대되는 이유다.

이전부터 IOWA 앨범보다 헤비할 것(또는 IOWA만큼)이라고 마케팅을 해서 인지 전체적으로 그 앨범을 의식해서 만든듯 하다. 6분 가까이 되는 노래임에도 집중이 될 정도로 트랙 자체도 열광적이다. 다만 이번 마케팅이 이들에게 득이 될지 독이 될지는 조금 판단하기가 어렵다.
