Ever busy and every experimenting with different musical avenues, Dan Swano’s most avant-garde group Pan.Thy.Monium finally released their magnum opus and swansong in Khaooohs & Kon-Fus-Ion. At around half an hour, this is quite short for a Progressive Avant-Garde Metal epic, and even then, the run time is padded with quite a bit of fluff. The last two tracks aren’t metal at all, and while one offers some nice atmosphere, the other is just silence.
Thankfully, the main tracks on this album make up for the short amount of good material by offering – quite plainly – VERY GOOD Avant-Garde Metal. As someone who is simply not into most of the genre, I can say with total confidence the music on display here is simply so good it transcends genres. Hell, this album makes Avant-Garde Jazz sound listenable… it’s incredible. It’s got a good amount a melody – bordering on melodeath riffage at times – some great atmospheres, and of course classic Death Metal riffing. The vocals are useless gibberish unfortunately, and there’s no real meaning to any of the music here aside from “let’s experiment and create some batshit crazy extreme metal.”
If this were a more straightforward delivery of music found on the main tracks, and had real vocals/lyrics, it would be a monstrous masterpiece. But it’s not and it doesn’t. It loses a lot of points on the many glaring weaknesses.

새로운 - 개인적인 입장에서 접하는 단위 - 음악을 듣거나 매체를 접할 때 개인적으로 가장 염두에 두는 점이 감상할 때 그 작품의 장르를 구분짓는 것이 얼마나 유의미하냐는 겁니다. 장르라는 것이 어떻게 발생하는 것인지를 시작지점까지 거슬러 올라가 시뮬레이션해 보면 이럴 겁니다. 음악을 예로 들어 설명하자면 어쨌든 기존의 악기/작법을 가지고 어떤 음악이 나왔을 것이고, 어떻게 하다 보니 유행을 타고 선호도가 높아지는 방향으로 걸러져 길든 짧든 어느 정도의 시간을 거쳐 순도가 높아지면 일종의 패턴화, 기호화된 어떤 형식으로 드러날 것입니다. 이것을 장르라고 이름붙이면 들어맞겠네요.
장르에 의한 구분법에는 중요한 장점이 있습니다. 바로 그 음악이 어떤 스타일을 가지고 있는지를 쉽게 유추할 수 있다는 거죠. 도서관이나 서점에서 특정 분야의 서적 코너를 찾아가는 것처럼 말입니다. 특히 취향에 따른 호불호가 강한 분야에서 가이드라인을 따라 원하는 걸 찾아내는 건 익숙함에 길들여진 사람에게는 정말 좋은 구분법이죠. 그런데 그 가이드라인을 벗어나는 범위를 가진 음악들을 접했을 때 - 개인적으로는 Breathcontrol 같이 아무도 안 들을 것 같은 사이버그라인드의 곡들을 예로 들고 싶군요. 물론 듣 ... zatiaľ posledné (a asi aj ostane posledným) album "Khaooohs & Kon-Fus-Ion" je z celej diskografie najviac podarené, pričom naďalej kombinuje experimentálny old school Death metal s občasnými prvkami avant-gardy. Výhodou oproti predošlým albumom je, že obsahuje viac podarených pasáži a ubudli naopak tie menej podarené.

In this album, death metal is combined with the method of avant-garde style composition. Some people criticise the sax in the middle of the track, but I like it though. I'd rather criticise that this album is losing its grip heading towards the end. But it's definitely a great album overall.
