Morbid Angel의 Blessed Are the Sick은 그들의 전작 Altars of Madness와 비교할 때 역사적인 가치를 지닌 앨범은 아닐지 몰라도, 여전히 기념비적인 작품이다. 이 앨범 또한 데뷔 앨범과 마찬가지로 초기 데스 메탈의 극적인 발전을 보여주는 중요한 고리이며, 후배 밴드들에게 광범위한 영향력을 행사했다. Altars of Madness가 거의 완벽에 가까운 데스 메탈의 혁신적인 명작으로 평가된다면, Blessed Are the Sick는 그보다 조금 더 다채롭고, 실험적인 요소가 강조된 앨범이다. 이 앨범은 어두운 분위기, 보다 복잡한 곡 구조, 그리고 슬로우 템포의 사용이 두드러지며, 초기 데스 메탈의 공격성을 그대로 유지하면서도 좀 더 고요하고, 침잠하는 등 새로운 면모를 보여준다. 발표하는 앨범마다 우열을 가리기 힘든 명반이라는 칭송이 따르는 Morbid Angel이다. 짜임새있고 정돈된 구성아래 멤버들의 살벌한 하이테크닉이 빛나는 두 번째 앨범 Blessed Are The Sick으로, 두 기타리스트의 스윕, 얼터네이트피킹 속주와 드러머 Pete Sandoval의 투베이스 드러밍이 돋보인다. 리더이자 기타와 키보드를 연주하는 Trey Azagthoth의 치밀한 송라이팅 아래 단순히 몰아부치는 것이 아닌 키보드와 어쿠스틱기타의 사용으로 어느정도 굴곡이 있고 공간감있는 사운드를 구사한다. Morbid Angel은 본작 Blessed Are The Sick 이후, 기타리스트 Richard Brunelle가 탈퇴하고 3인조 체제로 Covenant를 공개한다.

What felt like a big step up from the previous album. The guitars were much more chugging, the drums pushed the tempo and the vocals felt more refined and the overall mixing itself was just much better than the previous album. It's no where near a perfect album but I do especially enjoy it and it is my favorite of the Morbid Angel Albums so far

It was really fun to catch up a bit more with the history of death metal. As the consensus tends to go, it's not quite as good as their legendary debut. When I manage to put that out of my mind, I can hear how it's still quite a good album in its own right.

1집보다 무난한 사운드. 역겨움과 빡셈은 많이 줄었다. 그래도 좋다. 지겹거나 못만들었다고 생각은 안든다. 충분히 시간 날때마다 챙겨들을 만한 앨범. 요즘 내 귀 상태에는 5번같은 인트로로 시작하는 것도 참 반기는 편임

Big step down from their debut for me. A lot of very strong Death Metal, but also some pointless tracks and nothing mind blowing like on Altars of Madness.

1집과 3집의 압도적인 완성도 사이에 끼어 약간 위치가 애매해진 감은 있지만, 2집의 서정성과 잔혹함을 동시에 품은 구성 역시 고전 데스메탈 명반이라는 수식어에 전혀 부족함이 없다.

내가 이작품을 듣고 느낀점은 하나. 1집과 본작의 차이는 포제스드 1,2집의 차이라 할 수 있다. 물론 둘다 1집이 훨씬 우세하다는 점이다. 하지만 모비드앤젤 그 이름 어디 안가겠는가. 3,4,10번곡은 확실히 1집에서 보여준 이들의 독창적인 리듬감과 작곡센스가 여실히 묻어나온다.

Epic sophomore effort by Morbid Angel. More emphasis on the Death Metal aspects that the previous record, and they've done it really well. The early '90s Florida Death Metal scene ruled!

전작의 스래쉬 색이 줄어들고 전체적으로 균형잡힌 음악을 보여주지만 가면 갈수록 루즈할 뿐더러 중간,끝에 앨범 전체의 흐름을 깨는 키보드 경음악은 왜 넣었는지 아직도 의문이다.

93년에 시디를 구입해서 처음 들었을때가 생각난다. 그후로도 쭈욱 나의 베스트 앨범 나에게는 1집도 3집도 아닌 2집인 이 앨범이 최고의 명반

나에겐 이밴드는 이 앨범이 최고이다. 이들의 사상의 깊이와 사운드의 견고함,신비함은 여기서 시작돼었다. 이 앨범과 covenant 는... 다른 말이 필요없다. 1990년대 초의 death metal을 알고싶어하는 사람이라면 돈을 훔쳐서라도 사라.

분명 데스/스래쉬에서 한 발짝 넘어선, 데스메탈의 가장 기본이 되는 틀을 제시한 앨범임이 분명하겠다. 그래도 후반이 아쉽다.
