Mind-numbing. No, I don’t mean in a good way. I mean, by the end of the first track, I had taken just about all I could take of one-note soulless polyrhythmic chugging, and then preceded to suffer through 9 more tracks of the exact same thing with no variation. So repetitive is this album that when the atonal guitar noodling that would be terrible in any other context came up in track 3, I was actually excited because it was SOMETHING different. The little atmospheric reprieve near the end of the 4th track wasn’t anything special, but it was such a welcome break from the mechanical assault that my brain was tricked into enjoying it.
I actually like the guy’s harsh vocal sound, but the issue is… again… there’s absolutely no variation. It sounds like he’s trying as hard as possible to maintain one single tone, one note, one delivery… yeah, it certainly fits the music, and I get that’s what they’re going for. But just as with the rest of the music, I was sick of it after one track. Nine more aren’t going to convince me (or 8 since the last track is an instrumental).
Maybe there’s some grand meaning in those lyrics somewhere. I have no idea. This are some of the most pretentious, abstract lyricism since Tool. “Organic Shadows” has some neat lyrics about becoming mechanical, but most this is ‘I’m too smart for you’ cryptic existentialism.

그... 옛날에 많이 나돌던 '미래의 의상' 같은 그림들을 보면 막 사람들이 비닐 같은 외계인 옷을 입고 있는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 90년대에 박경림이 나왔던 과자 CF에서도, 미래의 모습이랍시고 해괴망측한 옷과 메이크업으로 사람을 치장해 놓았던 걸로 기억한다.
이 밴드더러 '메탈의 미래'라 표현하는 건, 이러한 미래상 예측과 같다고 본다.
일단은 '미래의 것'이니까 뭔가 있어 보여야 하고, 미래 사람들은 우리와 다른 무언가를 즐길 것 같고, 뭔가 독특하고 특이해야 미래다울 것 같고.... 그러한 사고의 함정에 빠지는 순간 줘도 안 입을 외계인 옷이 나오고, 은가루를 뿌려놓은 것 같은 해괴한 메이크업이 나오는 것이리라.
근데 뭐 미래 사람이라고 우리랑 다른 유전자를 가지겠는가? 90년대의 우리와 2010년대의 우리는 똑같이 양념치킨 향에 이끌리고, 예쁘장한 여성의 각선미에 홀리고, 펑펑 폭발하는 가운데 주인공이 다 때려부수는 영화에 열광한다. 세련됨과 디테일이란 측면에서의 차이야 있기는 하겠지만.
특이성과 기괴함만으로 메탈의 미래라는 수식어를 차지할 수 있을까? 글쎄. 당장은 머릿속에 물음표부터 떠오르는 게 사실이다.

함부로 손대기 어렵다는 Meshuggah의 음악이다.
스웨덴은 예로부터 익스트림 메탈의 천국으로 불렸다.
수많은 스웨덴 출신의 밴드들이 이 계열에서 엄청난 업적을 남겼으며, 심지어 Swedish Black Metal, Swedish Death Metal 등등의 말도 자주 보인다. 저런 말이 보인다는 거는 이 밴드의 장르가 일단 익스트림 메탈이고 스웨덴 출신이면 믿고 들어봐 라는 뜻으로 해석할 수 있다. 나는 그랬고 그것은 메탈 최대의 난제를 나에게 안겨주었다. 마치 LOL이라는 게임에서 '솔로랭크가 운이냐 실력이냐' 와 같은 절대 풀리지 않는 난제, 그것은 바로 '메슈가가 음악이냐 쓰레기냐' 이다.
개인적으로, 난 난해한 것을 이해하려고 노력하는 것을 좋아한다. 그냥 단순히 그 '과정' 이 힘들고 재미없고 쓰레기같더라도 혹시 아 이게 이런건가 라는 정말 SLIGHTEST한 감정만으로도 뭔가를 극복한듯한, 넘어선듯한 느낌을 받으면 괜히 기분이 좋아지기 때문이다.
그래서, 난 쭈욱 들어왔고 결국 개인적인 해답을 냈다. 이 앨범이 점수를 받을 만한 점이 있다면, 그 것은 앨범명일 것이다. 앨범명이 앨범의 컨셉을 아름답게 나타내는 경우, 예를 들면 Cradle of Filth 의 'Cruelty and the Beast' 처럼, 이 앨범은 말그대로 'NOTHING'이다. 언젠가 시간이 더 흐르고 메슈가 스타 ... See More

This album by Meshuggah has some good parts and some average parts. I like their older albums

Nice. I like the recording sound on this one, so I wonder what I'll think of the blue one. Not my favorite from Meshuggah, but I still got into it at a few points.

The album is not bad at all On the contrary, it was good But on this site, it has received a very high number of likes I find Meshuggah's music very interesting and on this album too

확실히 이들의 음악은 쓰잘데기없이 난해하다. 다만 그렇다고 해서 쓰레기로 매도하는 건 옳은 행위일까 흠. 나도 처음에 들을땐 이게 뭔가 싶었는데...글쎄 듣다보니까 그럭저럭 괜찮더라.

막곡땜에 10 점 깎았다. 앨런 홀스워스가 매스코어 한다고 생각하면 조금 설명이 될련지 모르겠다.
의도대로 못낸 앨범이 재녹음해서 발매한 리마스터보다 낫다는게 아이러니
