Manowar의 Gods of War는 그동안의 명성에 비해 급격한 하락세를 겪기 시작한 작품으로 평가될 수 있겠다. 이전 앨범들에서 보여준 강렬함과 폭발적인 에너지가 없는 것은 아니지만, 이 앨범을 들었을 때 받은 인상은 가지고 있던 강점마저 잃고, 과도한 과시와 지루함이었다. 많은 팬들은 이 앨범이 Manowar의 전성기를 지나가고 있는 신호였다고 받아들이고 있다. Gods of War는 완전한 컨셉 앨범으로, 고대 신화와 전쟁의 신들에 대한 이야기를 중심으로 진행되는데, 이 앨범에서 그 접근은 과도하게 과장된 느낌을 주고 있다. 과도한 극적인 연출과 너무 길어지는 곡들과 앨범의 진행을 방해하는 긴긴 나레이션 등은 이 앨범의 단점으로 지적할 수 있다. 몇몇 곡들은 전통적인 Manowar 사운드를 그대로 따라가려 하면서도 불필요하게 길어지고 반복적인 요소들로 인해 방해받은 나머지, 앨범을 끝까지 듣는 것이 고역이 되기도 하다. 그들의 대표적인 걸작인 Kings of Metal나 Louder Than Hell에서 느껴졌던 집중력이 Gods of War에서는 느껴지지 않는다. 밴드의 파워풀한 에너지보다는 드라마틱한 과잉 연출에 더 많은 비중을 둔 결과, 본래의 힘 있는 메탈 사운드가 약해진 느낌을 받았다. Gods of War는 Manowar의 하락세의 시작으로 평가될 수 있을 것 같다.

Manowar의 활동은 크게 세 시기로 나눌 수 있다고 생각한다. 처음 시기는 82년 [Battle hymn] 부터 시작해서 87년의 [Fighting the world] 가 발표되는 시기다. 이 시기 동안 Manowar의 앨범들은 굉장히 투박한 편이었다. 레코딩 상태도 썩 좋지는 않았고, 전반적으로 거친 사운드와 Adams의 다듬어지지 않은 보컬이 핵심을 이루는 시기였다고 할 수 있다. 다음 시기는 88년 [Kings of metal] 부터 시작해서 96년 [Louder than hell] 로 마무리지을 수 있는 시기다. 레코딩과 송라이팅에 있어 극적인 발전이 나타난 이 시기 Manowar는 최고의 전성기를 누렸으며, 잘 다듬어진 솔리드한 앨범들을 발표했다. 아마도 이 시기의 Manowar를 그들 최고의 순간(Their finest hour)이라고 부를 수 있지 않을까-처칠의 표현을 조금 인용해 보았다-. 그리고 그들은 한 동안 메탈 신에서 자취를 감췄다.
