Loudness의 1992년작 앨범은 밴드가 80년대 헤비메탈 전성기를 지나 새로운 음악적 도전을 시도한 작품이다. 80년대 특유의 화려한 속주와 파워풀한 사운드에서 한층 성숙한 분위기로 전환하며, 당시 전 세계 메탈 씬이 급격한 변화를 맞이하는 가운데 자신들의 스타일을 재정립하려는 의지가 담겨 있다. 특히 미국과 일본 등지에서의 시장 변화와 메탈 음악의 주류 흐름이 변하면서 Loudness 역시 음악적으로 한 단계 업그레이드를 모색했다. 이 앨범은 단순한 헤비메탈이 아닌, 프로그레시브한 요소와 다양한 음향 실험이 더해져 그들이 음악적으로 폭넓은 스펙트럼을 갖추려는 시도로도 읽힌다. 하지만 이 같은 시도는 기존 팬들에게는 낯설게 다가왔고, 당시 팬들의 기대와 밴드의 새로운 방향 사이에서 미묘한 간극을 형성했다는 점도 빼놓을 수 없다.

An interesting transition from their previous attempts at mainstream universal appeal, but an appropriate reinvention for a self-titled album. “Loudness” is, in my opinion, their best release since the legendary underground masterpiece “Disillusion.” This album returns to their riff and solo driven Heavy Metal of old, mostly forgoing catchy anthems in favor of more aggressive edge and musical substance.
There’s a great variety of midtempo groove and speedy aggression. The plodding “Love Kills” has a riff heavier than concrete, and album closer “Firestorm” is easily the fastest thing they’ve ever done. The flow of the album usually has faster numbers complimenting the slower ones and works very well.
The lineup changes here have to be addressed because they bring some great changes. Filling in for bass is Taiji – THE Taiji – of X Japan fame, and yeah, it’s noticeable. As long as you’ve got decent listening equipment, you can hear that bass throwing out groovy melodies the whole time, and it’s wonderful. New vocalist Masaki Yamada has what may be considered an “acquired taste” vocal style, which is an aggressive, strained, and accented style. However, it fits the more aggressive musical style here, and he is very good at English, not only speaking, but writing. 보컬리스트 마이클 베세라와 베이시스트 마사요시가 탈퇴한 후 EZO 출신의 마사키와 무려 X-Japan 출신의 설명할 필요가 없는 명베이시스트 사와다 타이지를 새 멤버로 발표한 셀프타이틀 앨범이다. 이전까지의 라우드니스의 곡에는 전형적인 스타일이 있었는데 이 앨범에선 강력해진, 흡사 판테라를 연상케 할만큼 강력한 스래쉬/파워 메탈 사운드를 들고 나왔다. 이런 스타일을 좋아하는 필자는 기대하지 않았던 라우드니스에게서 이런 사운드가 나와 신선하고 반가웠다.
아키라 다카사키와 히구치 무네타카야 말할 필요도 없이 잘 해주고 새로운 보컬 마사키의 실력도 상당하다. 정통파에 가까운 미노루와는 좀 다른 코어에도 어울릴 것 같은 스타일인데 새롭게 바뀐 밴드의 컬러에도 적절하다고 생각된다. 베이시스트 타이지의 실력도 역시 대단한데 Everyone Lies 에서 중간에 끝내주게 초퍼를 돌려댄다.

보컬과 베이시스트가 바뀌었는데 그게 성공적인 교체라고는 느껴지지 않지만 실패도 아닌것이 애매합니다. 정규앨범만 26장에 달하는 밴드인데, 사실 그 가운데 정말 즐겨듣는 작품이나 잘 만들었다고 생각하는 작품은 한 손에 꼽습니다. 개인적으로 좋아하는 두세 장 빼고는 잘 안 듣습니다. 본작은 이들 전작품의 평균치를 대표하는 앨범이 아닌가 생각합니다.

라우드니스는 Disillusion, Thunder In The East, Soldier Of Fortune 앨범을 끝으로, 더이상의 희망이 보이지 않는다. 이번 앨범의 멜로디는 전에 보여줬던 모습과는 다르게 전혀 캐치하지 않고, 파워에 집중한 것 치고는 엄청 헤비한 느낌이 들지도 않는다.

엑스 재팬 팬으로서 단순히 타이지의 이름만 보고 구해들었는데, 내용물이 너무 하드해서 놀랐다. 자꾸 듣다보면 빠져드는 그런 음반이다..

라우드니스의 숨은 명반 중 하나. 이 라인업으로 쭉 갔어도 괜찮았을 것 같다는 생각이 든다. 상당히 파워풀하고 각각의 파트가 절정의 기량을 발휘하고 있으니 말이다. 사실 이 앨범 이후로는 그닥 귀에 들어오지 않는다.
