Gardenian은 1996년 보컬과 기타의 Jim Kjell과 드럼의 Thim Blom을 주축으로 스웨덴 예테보리에서 결성된 밴드로, Melodic Death Metal을 들려준다. 97년 Listenable Records에서 데뷔작 Two Feet Stand를 내놓았으며, Nuclear Blast로 이적하여 99년에 발매한 두 번째 앨범이 본작 Soulburner이다. 헤비함과 멜로디컬함의 적절한 융화로 긍정적인 평가를 받았던 데뷔작에 비해, 기존 예테보리 사운드에서 탈피하려는 의지가 엿보이는 다채로운 곡들을 담고 있다. Swedish Melodic Death Metal 의 뼈대위에, 정통메틀적인 느낌, 몽환적이고 허무적인 사운드등이 난립하고 있는 모습이다. 인상적인 멜로디 라인의 부재와 곡들간의 통일감이 떨어진다는 것이 단점으로 지적된다.

Swedish Melodic Death Metal band Gardenian consisted of an enormously talented group of guys. Album "Soulburner" never gotten the attention it deserved and it is truly a pity, because it still sounds fresh even in these days. And with the next album, they raised the quality bar even higher.
